Intermittent fasting
Intermittent fasting is, quite simply, regularly not eating. It really couldn't be simpler. No more lists of do's and don'ts! Fasting is something we've been doing for centuries, just think of Ramadan or Carnival. Even the 'balance days' recommended by nutrition centres are based on the theory behind fasting. From an evolutionary perspective, our bodies are actually already geared towards it. In prehistoric times, there wasn't an abundance of food. Sometimes we had to travel for days, or the daily hunt would fail. Periods of not eating were quite common.
Methods
There are countless variations of fasting, all of which can be grouped under the term 'intermittent fasting'. The principle is as follows: you don't eat, or eat very little, for a certain period and then regularly alternate this with periods of normal eating. A few popular variations are:
Daily fasting
One consumes only one meal a day or chooses a set period, for example, five hours during which eating is allowed (preferably between five and ten in the evening). For the rest of the day, one drinks water and herbal tea. Paleo experts believe our distant ancestors hunted during the day and ate mainly and only in the evening. Such a system most closely resembles the evolutionary eating rhythm. If you find this difficult, you can also opt for the popular 16/8 method, where you eat all your meals within an 8-hour period. This intermittent fasting method is widely used because it's relatively easy to incorporate into daily life. For example, you start eating at 12.00 and have your last meal before 20.00.
The 5/2 method
Each week, you fast for 2 consecutive days. On fasting days, you are allowed to eat a very small amount, but the total calorie intake should not exceed 500 (women) or 600 (men) calories. These are not strict numbers, a bit more or less is allowed. On the other five days, you can eat whatever you want, as long as you do so in moderation.
Alternate day fasting
In this hardcore version, periods of 24-hour normal eating are alternated with periods of 24-hour fasting, during which only water, green tea, or coffee is consumed.
