What is ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha is a herb widely used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine and can be found in India, Africa, and the Mediterranean region. Ashwagandha comes from Sanskrit, a classical Indian language. The word ashwagandha is derived from "ashva", meaning horse, and "gandha", meaning smell, referring to the root which supposedly has a horse-like scent. Ashwagandha is also known as "Indian Ginseng" or Winter Cherry. As the name suggests, the long branches bear red, berry-like fruits. The roots and leaves of ashwagandha are used for their active compounds. The main active compound is withanolide, which is a flavonoid. How much ashwagandha per day?

There is no recommended daily amount of ashwagandha. In an ashwagandha supplement, it is important that there is enough of the active compound, withanolide, per dose. However, you would rather not ingest this compound as it does not have a positive effect on the body and can even negatively affect the efficacy of withanolide.
