These animals consume food containing astaxanthin, such as algae and plankton. In addition to algae and plankton, fungi and certain bacteria also produce astaxanthin. The majority of astaxanthin is found in the green microalga Haematococcus pluvialis, which is often used as a source in supplements. Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant and thus protects cells against oxidative damage.
