I've been reading through all the questions and answers about Solgar Magnesium Citrate and I keep seeing 200 mg mentioned, but the bottle clearly states it contains 400 mg and that 2 tablets are recommended. That makes it 800 mg per day! That seems a bit much, especially if there's a risk of diarrhoea. How exactly does that work? Kind regards, Elisabeth

Can this cause diarrhoea, or thick and thin stools?
On 08 february 2026 by Customer serviceCertain forms of magnesium can affect bowel movements. Magnesium citrate is one of them, because in this form the magnesium is ‘bound’ to citric acid. This substance can draw water into the intestines, causing stool to pass through your body more quickly, which can result in diarrhoea.
You could try lowering the dosage and making sure you take the supplement with food. If you still have symptoms, switching to a different form of magnesium may be an option. You’re always welcome to ask for advice on which form might suit you. A good alternative could be choosing a tablet that combines several forms of magnesium. This also reduces the chance of digestive discomfort. For example: Super Magnesium
Is it permissible to use this high-dose supplement during pregnancy?
