Multivitamins for women
Women have a higher need for iron than men due to blood loss during menstruation. The recommended amount of iron for women between 22 and 50 years is 15 mg per day (for men, it is 11 mg per day). Multivitamins for women therefore usually contain a slightly higher dose of iron, sometimes even more than the 15 mg mentioned above.
Well-known multivitamins for women include Strata Fem by Orthica and Female Multiple by Solgar. The Female Multiple provides a daily dose of 3 tablets with no less than 400 mg of calcium, 400 mg of magnesium, and 18 mg of iron, in the form of the highly absorbable iron bisglycinate.
Multivitamins for women in menopause have a lower amount of iron, or no iron at all, and usually contain slightly higher dosages of nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, vitamin K, and vitamin D. Sometimes these types of multivitamins also contain a complex of isoflavones, and extracts from, for example, black cohosh.
A well-known example of this is VM-Prime for Women by Solgar, which provides a daily dose of 3 tablets with 300 mg of calcium, 150 mg of magnesium, 25 micrograms of vitamin D, and 45 micrograms of vitamin K.
Most of the multivitamins on this page are for women in general. For multivitamins and other dietary supplements for women during and after menopause, see: Multi 45+.
