NZVT
NZVT is the Dutch Security System for Nutritional Supplements in Elite Sports. This system offers manufacturers of nutritional supplements the opportunity to have their supplements checked for a fee. The products are tested per batch by a designated laboratory for doping-related substances. These tests are randomly subjected to additional checks through a security system. When a product/batch is found to be "clean," it is placed in the database.
Is that necessary?
The use of nutritional supplements is widespread in sports. Various studies have shown that some nutritional supplements may contain doping substances. However, this is not always clearly stated on the label. The use of nutritional supplements can thus be a risk for elite athletes as it can lead to a positive result in doping control. To minimise the risks of an unintended positive doping test and to provide (elite) athletes and their coaches with more clarity on the subject of "nutritional supplements and doping," the Dutch Security System for Nutritional Supplements in Elite Sports has been established.
What is checked?
The production of the supplements that are part of the NZVT is carried out according to enhanced quality requirements aimed at doping controls as they occur in sports (in addition to the requirements imposed on all food products in the Netherlands). This is the HACCP-Plus/NZVT system. Furthermore, the produced nutritional supplements have a clear, elite sports-friendly ingredient declaration. This means that all ingredients are indicated with understandable terms. Subsequently, the products are tested for the presence of (more than 160!) doping-related substances. Not all substances on the doping list are tested for as there are no valid reasons to assume that all these substances can unknowingly occur in nutritional supplements.
Vitaminstore's own brand products
Nutritional supplements are produced in "charges" or "batches." This batch receives a code. The batch code is placed on the labels by producers in various ways, in combination with the expiry date. So pay close attention: when a statement is made about the quality of a particular product, this statement only applies to that batch! There are producers who do not have every batch checked, so be aware of this.
Vitaminstore has entered into an agreement with the NPN (industry association for producers, raw material suppliers, wholesalers, importers, and distributors of nutritional supplements) for the NZVT. This means that all batches of Vitaminstore's own brand products (which are registered with the NPN and listed below) are checked. When producers have all batches checked, they are also allowed to place the NZVT logo on the labels. These can also be found on the labels of our products.
Where can I find the batch numbers of checked products?
All checked products can be found on the website of the doping authority in the NZVT database, but also via the Dopingwaaier App.
Please note: the NZVT is set up to provide athletes with additional information about doping-related risks but does not assume any responsibilities. The ultimate responsibility for taking supplements and for the possible presence of doping-related substances in the body always remains entirely with the athlete themselves.
