What exactly are electrolytes?
Electrolytes are minerals dissolved in a liquid in ionic form (meaning not bonded with other elements, but as free electrically charged particles). Table salt (sodium chloride), for instance, splits into the ions Na+ (positively charged sodium) and Cl- (negatively charged chloride) when dissolved in water. In this way, minerals also exist in our bodies, dissolved in intra- and extracellular fluids like blood plasma, and they play a role in various processes. Examples of important electrolytes include sodium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride. When someone sweats a lot, a significant amount of sodium is lost, and to a lesser extent, other electrolytes as they exit with the perspiration.

Fluid and Electrolyte Balance
The body primarily loses sodium (and chloride) through sweat because sodium is mainly located extracellularly (such as in the bloodstream), while potassium and magnesium are primarily intracellular. It's important for the body to maintain both the correct fluid balance and electrolyte balance. If an athlete only drinks water to compensate for fluid loss but does not replenish sodium, the blood will become 'diluted,' and the relative concentration of sodium ions will decrease. This can affect normal physiological function. Therefore, it's important to also take extra sodium during sports to replenish lost sodium. It's even better to supplement with chloride and small amounts of potassium and magnesium.
