Transition
The transition is the term used for the end of a woman's fertile period, marked by a changing menstrual pattern. The end of the transition is characterised by the first years without menstruation. Within this entire period, there are different phases:
- Pre-menopause: the period preceding the menopause, during which the menstrual cycle is still somewhat regular.
- Peri-menopause: the period before menopause when menstruations change, up to a year after the last menstruation.
- Menopause: the last menstruation in a woman's life. The timing of the menopause is determined retrospectively, a year after the absence of menstrual bleeding.
- Post-menopause: the period from a year after the last menstruation.
Throughout the entire transition period, women may experience complaints related to the changing function of the ovaries, the dwindling supply of eggs, and a reduced production of oestrogen.
