Omega 3 for children: fish oil for kids
Fish is an excellent source of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. Many experts recommend starting with additional fish oil intake during pregnancy, and continuing throughout childhood with liquid supplements and chewable capsules to provide extra DHA and/or EPA.
The advantage of fish oil from dietary supplements is that it is carefully purified and strictly monitored for contaminants like heavy metals. These products are therefore safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
On this page, you will find all our fish oil products suitable for young children (up to about 7 years old) and older children. Chewable capsules and tablets, due to choking hazards, are only suitable for children aged 3 and above. However, the contents of the capsules are suitable for all ages. You can carefully open these capsules with a clean pair of scissors and mix the oil with some food. Children from 12 years old can use adult fish oil capsules.
Most supplements for children up to about 7 years old contain primarily DHA, whereas supplements for older children mainly contain EPA. DHA is a component of brain cells, and the brain is still growing until the age of 7.
The European Food Safety Administration (EFSA) states: "DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal vision and the maintenance of normal brain function. This beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 250 mg DHA."
