Echinacea
Herbs have been used for thousands of years to support our physical health. We know of Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic practices where herbs play a significant role. But in Europe, we are also familiar with the medicinal properties of various herbs. It wasn't until Western medicine began to develop and penicillin (the first antibiotic) was invented around 1930 that herbal medicine faded into the background. However, many medicines have been developed based on compounds from different herbs. A well-known plant that was very popular at the time and is still widely used as a medicinal herb is Echinacea. The name comes from the Latin "achnos" meaning '(sea) urchin', the word 'achnos' is derived from the Greek word 'echinos', which also stands for '(sea) urchin'. This name was given to the plant in 1794 by the German botanist Conrad Moench because of the prickly scales of the dried seed heads.
