Probiotics for Infants and Young Children
In our intestines reside colonies of various bacterial strains, known as the gut flora. These bacteria are ingested by everyone through foods like yoghurt and quark. An infant receives the first bacterial strains via the birth canal and the mother's nipples.
Some bacterial strains are particularly suited to the sensitive intestinal lining of infants. Other strains, such as the well-known Lactobacillus acidophilus, are suitable for slightly older children, roughly from the time of weaning.
Probiotics & Other Important Information
This page provides an overview of probiotics for infants and young children. Older children (from about 7 years) can safely use probiotics for adults.
Some of these products are suitable from birth (Microbiol Child 0-4 years, Bacteri 5 Infantis), or two weeks later (Orthiflor Start).
Please note: the well-known product ABC Dophilus from Solgar has been permanently discontinued since early 2016. The product that most closely resembles it in composition is Orthica's Orthiflor Start.
Probiotics are completely safe in the recommended amounts, and overdosing is virtually impossible. However, during the first week of use, changes in bowel movements, such as gas formation and an increase in intestinal cramps, may occur. These symptoms usually disappear after about 5 days of use.
If symptoms persist, please consult your GP or midwife promptly.
Probiotics can be dissolved in a bottle of water or (expressed) milk, or, for example, mixed into a fruit puree. In the case of breastfeeding, half a teaspoon of powder can be mixed with a few drops of water to form a paste, which can then be applied to the nipples or directly into your child's mouth.
Probiotics are not laxatives. They should be seen as support for the normal, natural gut flora. Therefore, it is advisable to finish a package, even if it no longer seems necessary.
Probiotics often contain maltodextrin as a carrier. This is a minuscule amount that per serving does not affect blood sugar levels. If you would still prefer a probiotic without maltodextrin, you might choose Vital's Microbiol Child 0-4 years drops.
Note: powders are sensitive to moisture. Therefore, ensure the jar is only opened in a dry area and with dry hands. Once exposed to moisture, the powder can clump into a hard mass, and the quality will quickly deteriorate. Preferably finish a jar of powder within a few weeks.
