The richest natural source of astaxanthin is the Haematococcus pluvialis, which is also known as the blood rain algae due to its deep red colour. Animals that consume these algae acquire a distinctive pink-red hue. Think of salmon, lobster, crab, trout, and shrimp. Some birds, such as flamingos, also ingest this pigment.

The entire production is powered by solar energy. Furthermore, underground seawater is used during the production process, eliminating the need for drinking water. This water is then 80% recycled. The production process of AstaPure® is therefore fully sustainable.

Green and red phase
The production occurs in two phases that mimic the accumulation of astaxanthin in nature. In the green phase, the algae enjoy optimal natural growth conditions, allowing them to grow maximally. In the red phase, the algae are exposed to harsh conditions, causing them to produce astaxanthin as a defence mechanism.
