Hello, I want to start taking extra vitamin D3 due to mild rheumatic complaints. Due to mild bone demineralisation, I have been taking calcium tablets daily for years, which contain 10 mcg of vitamin D3. I am 49 years old. The level of vitamin D (250H) in my blood is 59. What amount of vitamin D3 would be best to take as an additional supplement? Thank you in advance for your advice.

A good maintenance dose is 75 mcg in the winter and 25 mcg in the months when there is a bit more sun. In the Netherlands, you can acquire vitamin D from the sun for three months a year.

Vitamin D3 is the form of vitamin D that our body naturally produces when our skin is exposed to sunlight. The number next to "µg" (microgram) indicates the amount of vitamin D3 in the product. So, D3 15 µg means there are 15 micrograms of vitamin D3 in the product, and D3 25 µg means there are 25 micrograms. As for which dosage is better, it depends on your personal needs. Some people might require a higher dosage, for instance, if they spend little time outdoors or have darker skin. Others might find a lower dosage sufficient. I personally take this vitamin D. From what age can these vitamins be taken? I have two children, one nearly 10 and one 12 years old. Both have a slight tan, so vitamin D is often even more important for them, isn’t it?

A good guideline for children aged 10 and above is 25 mcg (1000 IU) of vitamin D per day. For example, Solgar offers the Vitamin D-3 1000 IU.
Vitamin D is also available in liquid form. This is somewhat easier for children to take than a capsule. Solgar's Liquid Vitamin D-3 provides 4 micrograms of vitamin D per drop. You can give them both 6 drops per day, totalling about 24 mcg of vitamin D.
You can also comfortably take a slightly higher dose than 15 mcg. Approximately 25 mcg per day is also a good guideline for adults (with or without a tan).
