Bioflavonoids
Bioflavonoids are water-soluble substances found alongside vitamin C, particularly in fresh fruits and vegetables. Bioflavonoids are considered synergists of vitamin C. They enhance the bioavailability of vitamin C.

Function of Vitamin C
Vitamin C is perhaps the most mentioned vitamin, mainly known for its positive influence on the immune system. And that's correct, vitamin C supports the immune system, especially during periods of heavy physical exertion or in cold environments. However, this vitamin is involved in many processes.

Vitamin C functions in the body as a water-soluble antioxidant and plays an important role as a free radical scavenger. It is part of a complex system of endogenous antioxidants, dietary antioxidants, and antioxidant enzymes with interdependencies and interactions. In this capacity, it is involved in protecting DNA, proteins, and fats from oxidative damage, thereby contributing to the maintenance of healthy cells and tissues. Additionally, vitamin C is required as a coenzyme for three different enzymes involved in collagen production (the most common structural protein in the human body). Normal collagen formation is important for bones, cartilage, gums, skin, tendons, and blood vessels, among others.

Vitamin C is needed as a co-factor for dopamine beta-monooxygenase (DBM), the enzyme that converts dopamine into noradrenaline and adrenaline. Both function in the body as neurotransmitters and hormones, and thus vitamin C has a positive influence on the functioning of the nervous system and contributes to normal psychological function. Vitamin C is indispensable for two enzymes involved in the production of carnitine, which is necessary for the transport of long-chain fatty acids to the mitochondria for energy production.

In this way, vitamin C supports energy levels. It can also help with fatigue. Moreover, many people do not get enough iron from their diet, especially women of childbearing age, pregnant women, and (young) children. Vitamin C ensures that iron from food is better absorbed. This concerns non-haem iron, which is found in plant and animal foods. Vitamin C has no effect on the absorption of haem iron, which is only found in animal products. About 90% of the iron in food is non-haem iron. Only 10% is haem iron. As an electron donor, vitamin C can convert oxidised vitamin E back into its active, reduced form, maintaining the function of vitamin E.

Humans cannot synthesise vitamin C themselves and are entirely dependent on diet for their vitamin C supply.
