I take Solgar Calcium Citrate/Magnesium Citrate. I've read that calcium and magnesium should not be taken together as calcium can inhibit the absorption of magnesium. How does this work?
It's often advised to take calcium and magnesium separately due to possible competition in absorption. However, in the case of Solgar's Calcium Magnesium Citrate, they are bound as citrate, which means they do not require stomach acid to be absorbed.
This specific form of binding allows both minerals to be absorbed simultaneously without negatively affecting each other. So yes, you can take them together without worrying about reduced absorption.
If you have any other questions, please let us know via email!
Which magnesium does this contain? Because I see the poorly absorbable oxide and the citrate. It's a bit unclear.
This supplement contains both magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate. If you would like personal advice, please send an email to info@vitaminstore.nl.
I am currently taking Pregnancy Complete. I would like to take magnesium citrate and calcium citrate additionally as a supplement to my diet. I obtain an average of 500 mg of calcium from my diet and am accustomed to taking 150-300 mg of magnesium citrate. How many tablets can I take per day to supplement to a daily amount of 1000 mg of calcium citrate? And is this supplement, including the excipients, suitable during pregnancy?
Yes, Calcium Magnesium Citrate can be safely used during pregnancy. The excipients can be easily excreted by the body in these amounts.
Each tablet provides 200 mg of calcium and 100 mg of magnesium.
The Pregnancy Complete provides 62 mg of magnesium per daily dose. It contains no significant amount of calcium (it is part of calcium pantothenate and calcium ascorbate, but these are only a few milligrams).
Therefore, you could take 2 tablets, bringing the total to 400 mg of calcium and 262 mg of magnesium. Or, if you are uncertain about your calcium intake on certain days, you could take 3 tablets, bringing the total to 600 mg of calcium and 362 mg of magnesium.
If you wish to minimise your intake of excipients (including the safe but notorious titanium dioxide), it is better to take calcium and magnesium as loose powder rather than in tablet form.
For instance, there is Calcium Magnesium Citrate 1:1 Powder from NOW. It does contain a small amount of vitamin D, but that is not a problem.
You should also consider that a serving provides equal amounts of calcium and magnesium, resulting in approximately 300 mg of calcium and 362 mg of magnesium.
I want to become pregnant and have ordered Elke Dag Mama from Vitals. However, it contains hardly any calcium, and not much magnesium either. I hardly consume dairy. Can I take these alongside Elke Dag Mama? Is 500mg of magnesium not too much? Ideally, I would prefer to take a maximum of 300mg of magnesium per day, with 1000mg of calcium - but I have yet to find a supplement with these ratios.
Dairy is not the primary source of calcium. Vegetables are by far the most important source of calcium and especially magnesium. Legumes, nuts, seeds, and meat also provide large amounts of calcium and magnesium.
Magnesium can cause loose stools starting from around 500mg (as it attracts moisture in the intestines). Furthermore, at these dosages, it is very safe. The same applies to calcium in dosages up to around 1500mg per day.
If you eat healthily (and dairy is not essential in that regard), you could take three tablets of Solgar's Calcium Magnesium Citrate. This would provide 600mg of calcium and 300mg of magnesium. Together with Elke Dag Mama, that is more than sufficient. You could also consider taking 1 tablet of CalAsorb alongside it, bringing the total to (600 + 30 + 267) a total of 897mg.
Yes, even as an adult, you can make use of the Calcium chewable tablets (with magnesium).
However, calcium and magnesium (as citrates) in powder form, such as the Calcium & magnesium 1:1 from NOW, are proportionately more cost-effective.
