4 Ways to Enhance Your Skin from the Inside and Out
Vitaminstore is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year! For a quarter of a century, Vitaminstore has been the place for the highest quality vitamins, the best personal advice, and of course... premium natural skincare products! While beauty trends have been rapidly changing over the past 25 years, our beauty advice remains consistent: we always look at how we can support your skin from both the inside and outside to initiate genuine skin improvement. And as it’s our birthday, we’re treating you! In this blog, we share 4 insights about your skin that will help you understand how to enhance it.

Your skin reflects your inner health
Your skin is your largest organ and a pathway for your body to expel toxins. Therefore, your skin often reflects what is happening internally. For instance, if you don’t drink enough water, your skin can become dehydrated, and your lips may feel drier. You might also have food intolerances that manifest as specific skin issues like eczema. Would you like to improve your skin? It’s important to realise that a skin problem often doesn’t stand alone and that your skin needs the right support from both the outside and inside. A good tip is to pay attention to how you feel after eating certain foods: do you experience bloating, constipation, or low energy? Try avoiding these foods and see how it affects your body and skin. Extra tip: drink at least two litres of water daily to prevent skin dehydration.

A youthful skin corresponds with your biological age
Building and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial for a radiant skin. Most of us know that smoking ages your skin and sunbathing all day can lead to wrinkles. But did you know that an older-looking skin can reveal even more about your lifestyle? Research shows that people with older-looking skin often have a higher biological age. What does this mean? Your biological age can differ from your chronological age and indicates how far along you are in the ageing process compared to your chronological age. In short: not every sixty-year-old is the same. While one may still cycle to work with ease, another might already suffer from early ageing ailments. And it turns out that this ‘youthfulness’ is also reflected in the condition of your skin. In summary: do you look young for your age? Then it might be that your biological age is lower than your chronological age. Do you have older-looking skin than most of your peers? Then perhaps your biological age is older than your chronological age, and it might be time to critically evaluate your lifestyle.

Good skincare requires more than just a cream
Nowadays, there are innovative, natural skincare products on the market with active ingredients that truly deliver on their promises. Consider Premier Cru De Crème by Caudalie with patented TET8™ technology; or Total Renewal Night Cream by MÁDARA, which activates cell processes to rejuvenate the skin. This external care provides a solid foundation to keep your skin radiant, youthful, and firm. However, many people forget that internal skincare also plays a vital role. Consider this: everything you eat forms the building blocks from which your body, including your skin, is constructed. A skincare routine is truly complete when you eat healthily: think of a diet rich in vitamins, antioxidants, fruits, and vegetables. Supplement this with supplements that are suitable for you. A good example of a supplement recommended from the age of 25 is collagen. As you age, the production of this substance decreases, leading to signs of skin ageing. Taking collagen daily reduces both early and existing signs of skin ageing. It’s definitely one of our favourites for nourishing your skin from within! You can take collagen in various forms, such as in powder form or in capsules. Another good example is vitamin C: this vitamin aids in skincare from the inside out. It is therefore often added to supplements aimed at maintaining the elasticity and normal structure of the skin. Additionally, vitamin C is an important building block for the formation of body’s own collagen.

The order of your skincare routine is extremely important
Cleansers, creams, toners, oils, and serums... The products can sometimes be overwhelming. They each offer unique value and have their own active ingredients to care for your skin. But did you know that these products, and therefore their effectiveness, only come into their own when applied in the correct order? Generally, you should always apply products from thin to thick. A thin, water-based serum can have trouble penetrating a greasy cream, and a liquid toner can sit as a layer on top of your nourishing oil. The correct order is:
- Remove your makeup.
- Cleanse your skin (if you do this in two steps: first use an oil-based cleanser, then a water-based cleanser).
- Apply a toner to neutralise your skin.
- Optionally, use an exfoliant.
- Optionally, use a booster, such as a vitamin C booster or ampoules.
- Apply a serum, for example, hyaluronic acid.
- Use an eye cream.
- Apply your day or night cream on top.
- If your day cream doesn’t contain SPF, don’t forget to add it as the last step (for daytime).
