Vitamin B12 was discovered in 1928 and is one of the 8 vitamins in the B complex. B12 is also known as cobalamin, named after the substance cobalt, which is a component of the vitamin. Cobalamin is a water-soluble vitamin essential for your body. There are different forms of vitamin B12 namely:
 
• cyanocobalamin
• methylcobalamin
• adenosylcobalamin 
• hydroxocobalamin
 
Cyanocobalamin is a synthetic form of cobalamin that must be converted in the stomach to the active biological forms methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin. These biologically active forms are also found in our food and, unlike cyanocobalamin, are easily absorbed by the body. Hydroxocobalamin is usually not used as a tablet but is often administered monthly or every 2 months by a doctor via injection. 
 
Where is vitamin B12 found?
Vitamin B12 is only found in animal foods such as fish, meat, dairy, and eggs. This is also why people with a vegan lifestyle are advised to pay attention to their vitamin B12 intake and supplement their diet with a vitamin B12 supplement.
 
Absorption of vitamin B12 in the body
Vitamin B12 can only be absorbed by the small intestine if it is bound to a substance produced by the stomach lining: intrinsic factor (IF). When the intrinsic factor is bound to B12 (the extrinsic factor), the vitamin can be absorbed into the body via the small intestine. 
 
Older people produce less intrinsic factor. The use of antacids also reduces the production of intrinsic factor. 
Another group of people who need to pay attention to their vitamin B12 absorption are those who have had a gastric reduction or undergone a gastric bypass. In both cases, vitamin B12 absorption is permanently disrupted, and supplementation or vitamin B12 injections are necessary. 
 
What is B12 good for?
Vitamin B12 is important for the formation of nerve cells, normal blood formation, and maintaining a healthy energy level, thus contributing to the reduction of fatigue. Vitamin B12 also has a positive influence on the immune system and supports a normal homocysteine metabolism.
