Pycnogenol® is a patented and standardised extract from the bark (the outer part of the trunk) of the maritime pine (Pinus pinaster), a type of pine tree that grows on the southwest coast of France. Pines are traditionally also referred to as pine trees. The extract is rich in various types of polyphenols, including oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) and organic acids (including ferulic acid, cinnamic acid, and caffeic acid). There is already a long tradition in the use of Pycnogenol®. It has been used as a dietary supplement for about 40 years. It is now one of the most researched nutrients in the world, with more than 300 scientific publications.

The biological effects of the extract are broad and are based on a multiple mechanism of action. Pycnogenol® has a strong antioxidant effect and can protect various body cells against free radicals. In addition, it contributes to the maintenance of good blood circulation and flexible blood vessels, due to a favourable influence on the production of NO (nitric oxide) from the amino acid L-arginine in the vessel walls. NO is involved in many regulatory mechanisms, including in the vessel wall. Pycnogenol® helps keep the connective tissue in the walls of veins and capillaries strong, and can therefore be useful for unsightly veins. It also supports microcirculation (dilation of capillaries), including in the brain.

For athletes, Pycnogenol® can also be a valuable addition due to its antioxidant action, in combination with the right nutrition and training.
