Alpha-lipoic acid is a sulphur-containing fatty acid that naturally occurs in the human body. The substance has been known since the 1930s. In 1957, the substance was isolated for the first time and given the name alpha-lipoic acid. Alpha-lipoic acid consists of a chain of eight carbon atoms, with two sulphur atoms attached. The two sulphur atoms are connected, resulting in a ring structure. Due to this ring structure, alpha-lipoic acid is soluble in both fat and water, an important property. Alpha-lipoic acid is a molecule that is found in the mitochondria of every cell.

Our body produces small amounts of R-alpha-lipoic acid. Additionally, the R-form of alpha-lipoic acid is found in small amounts in food, for example in liver, spinach, and broccoli. In food, alpha-lipoic acid is always bound to protein (specifically to the amino acid lysine). Before it can be absorbed, alpha-lipoic acid must first be detached from lysine. In supplements, alpha-lipoic acid is present in its free form (as a mixture of the R/S form or as pure R form).

R-form most effective
There are two forms of alpha-lipoic acid, namely R-alpha-lipoic acid (the natural, endogenous form) and S-alpha-lipoic acid (the synthetic form). Most products on the market are a mixture of these two. S-alpha-lipoic acid does not occur in nature and is foreign to the body, and may possibly make the R-form less effective. Therefore, a supplement consisting entirely of the natural R-form is preferred. The problem with R-alpha-lipoic acid, however, is that this substance is quite unstable and temperature-sensitive. Producer GeroNova has therefore developed bio-enhanced sodium R-lipoate, in which R-alpha-lipoic acid is bound to the mineral sodium. This ensures that the R-form is much more stable and has optimal bioavailability.
