MSM is the abbreviation for methylsulfonylmethane, or organically bound sulphur. MSM contains over 34% elemental sulphur and also contains two methyl groups. MSM is naturally found in rainwater, fresh fruits and fresh vegetables (1 to 4 mg MSM per kg). MSM is relatively volatile and easily disappears when heated or stored for long periods. Breast milk is the richest natural source of MSM.

MSM necessary for life on earth
The importance of MSM for life on earth is significant. Without MSM, life on earth as we know it would not exist. MSM is formed in nature as part of the earth's sulphur cycle: algae and plant plankton in the oceans massively absorb inorganic sulphur from seawater and convert it into a simple organic form. When algae and plankton die, enzymes ensure that the organic sulphur compounds are broken down into dimethylsulfide (DMS). This substance is volatile and does not dissolve well in water. It therefore collects high in the atmosphere, where under the influence of ultraviolet light and ozone it is converted into dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and further into methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). DMSO and MSM are well soluble in water. They form the condensation nuclei needed for raindrop formation. Without DMSO and MSM in the air, no clouds form, and it does not rain. Roots of trees and plants are able to quickly and efficiently absorb DMSO and MSM from rainwater.

Production method
Although MSM is a natural substance, it would be impractical to extract MSM naturally. So many trees would have to be cut down, which would not be desirable. The raw materials currently used are DMSO, water and hydrogen peroxide. Through a complex process, DMSO is then converted into MSM. It is crucial that the applied production method leads to a pure end product. Unfortunately, this is not always the case in MSM production. The expensive distillation method, which effectively removes any impurities that may occur in the raw materials, is absolutely preferred over the often applied (much cheaper) crystallisation method.
