Recent TNO Study
In a recent – independent, non-commercial – systematic review by TNO (2018), Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG was rated the best compared to other probiotic strains and mixtures. Only probiotic products available on the Dutch market were included, with which randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies have been conducted using the (combination of) bacterial strain(s). The aim of the research was to provide doctors and health professionals with a guide based on solid scientific evidence, enabling them to confidently advise on the use of probiotic products. Three high-quality, independent human studies with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG resulted in the highest score of three stars. It is also the only strain with three stars. Furthermore, there were about six strains or mixtures with one star. Notably, this single strain scored better compared to formulations with more strains. More is not always better. Moreover, this review once again demonstrates that it is crucial for probiotics to be assessed based on strain-specific research. And if multiple strains are present in a product, studies should be conducted with that specific combination of strains. The Danish firm Chr. Hansen, the probiotic specialist, owns and produces this bacterial strain. Their advanced production process ensures that the capsules remain long-lasting in a closed package outside the refrigerator. This is, of course, convenient in practice and in the store.
