Ordinary vitamin C as ascorbic acid is the acidic form and at higher doses, it can irritate the gastrointestinal tract and cause diarrhoea.

Buffered vitamin C, on the other hand, loses its acidic form due to its binding (buffering) with calcium and magnesium, resulting in ascorbate rather than ascorbic acid. We need much less of this to optimise vitamin C absorption and health.
