Magnesium oxide is not absorbed by the body, so why still add it to products? I know this is a cheaper form, but the body does not absorb it. Regards, Petra
On 02 july 2019 by Customer serviceOur stomach acid produces hydrochloric acid (HCl) which reacts with magnesium oxide to form magnesium chloride, which can be absorbed in the intestines and bloodstream.
Although magnesium oxide is absorbed more slowly and less efficiently than magnesium that is already bound to citric acid (magnesium citrate) or an amino acid (such as magnesium bisglycinate or magnesium taurate), it is incorrect to claim that it is not absorbed at all. It simply requires more effort from the body, and it is important that there is sufficient stomach acid available. As a result, absorption takes more time.
An important advantage of magnesium oxide is that it is compact. It is much more compact than the bound magnesium variants. This allows a relatively large amount of magnesium to fit into one tablet, in this case, as much as 400 mg (and this is also combined with calcium and other minerals). Magnesium citrate tablets typically provide only 200 mg per tablet, and the amino acid-bound variants about 100 mg per tablet.
The fact that it is cheaper plays a less significant role for manufacturers like Orthica. The primary concern is that it is more compact. For the same reason, many multivitamins contain calcium and magnesium oxide to avoid the need to take 4 or 5 tablets a day.
Is it harmful for you if the dosage is too high? Magnesium citrate 200 is also available, you know.

Taking it on an empty stomach has certain advantages, such as rapid absorption and optimal utilisation of the available stomach acid. This is particularly beneficial for this formula, as these tablets not only contain magnesium but also calcium. When the tablets are taken with a meal, they will absorb some of the stomach acid (for this reason, it is advisable not to take high-dose calcium/magnesium formulas simultaneously with a multivitamin, as this could negatively affect the absorption of the multi).
The downside is that nausea may occur (this applies to all tablets and capsules taken on an empty stomach). Moreover, there is a greater risk of loose stools (diarrhoea) when magnesium is taken on an empty stomach.
The manufacturer, like many others, has chosen to advise "with a meal" as the dosage recommendation for the Magnesium-400. You can certainly deviate from this if it suits you better.
