S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine (SAMe) is a sulphur-containing amino acid that is primarily produced in the liver and is not found in food. It can be formed in the body by a combination of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and the amino acid L-methionine. SAMe plays a role in the transfer of sulphur in the body and is converted via the methionine cycle into cysteine, which can then be converted into glutathione or taurine. SAMe also plays a role in the formation of creatine, which is important for athletes. Melatonin requires SAMe as a methyl donor. As people age, the ability to produce SAMe decreases.
