Methylsulfonylmethane, better known as MSM, is a source of sulphur. Discover everything about MSM here: what it is, where it comes from, what it does, and how it can support your health.

What is MSM?

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is an organic sulphur compound that occurs naturally in plants, animals and humans. Sulphur is a mineral found in the body and forms part of various structures. MSM is often used as an ingredient in food supplements and is a common substance in products aimed at an active lifestyle. In addition, MSM is regularly combined with other ingredients in supplements, such as glucosamine and chondroitin.

Sources of MSM

Sulphur is a mineral that is widespread in nature, particularly in the form of MSM. It is present in small amounts in our diet. Some natural sources of MSM include fish, meat, dairy products, nuts, fresh vegetables and fruit. The amount of MSM in food can vary greatly depending on the soil in which it is grown and the processing methods used.

What does MSM do?

Sulphur is a mineral found in the body and forms part of various compounds. It plays a role in a range of biochemical processes, including processes involving sulphur-containing amino acids.
One example is so-called methylation processes: methylation is a natural biochemical process in which a methyl group — a small chemical group consisting of one carbon atom and three hydrogen atoms (CH₃) — is transferred from one molecule to another. This process takes place continuously in the body, particularly in cells, and plays a role in a wide range of biochemical reactions. Methylation occurs, among other places, in the liver, but also in other tissues and organs. Because this process is involved in many different reactions in the body, methylation is a topic of extensive scientific research. MSM is a sulphur compound that is often mentioned in this context because it is a source of sulphur.
