Been using it for a month now, so far so good
In all Vitals products containing vitamin B6, only pyridoxal-5’-phosphate (P-5’-P) is used, the biologically active form of vitamin B6, and not pyridoxine-HCL which needs to be converted in the body. Vitamin B6 in its biologically active form of pyridoxal-5’-phosphate acts as a co-factor in more than 140 enzymatic reactions in the body and thus has various physiological functions. For instance, nearly all amino acids require one or more enzymes dependent on pyridoxal-5’-phosphate for their metabolism. P-5’-P dependent enzymes also play a role in glycogen metabolism. In this way, vitamin B6 contributes to good energy provision and can help with fatigue.
Pyridoxal-5’-phosphate is also involved in the production of haem compounds and haemoglobin, ensuring that more oxygen can be bound to and released from red blood cells. Haem compounds are also present in mitochondria, which further explains the contribution of pyridoxal-5’-phosphate to energy levels. Since pyridoxal-5’-phosphate is also absorbed in the brain and P-5’-P dependent enzymes play a role in the production of neurotransmitters, it also contributes to normal brain and nerve functions.
Vitamin B6 also plays a role in the immune system as it is needed as a co-enzyme for the production of certain immunoglobulins (antibodies produced to neutralise viruses or bacteria) and cytokines (substances that send signals to activate or inhibit the immune system). Additionally, it contributes to the production of cysteine and the production and breakdown of homocysteine. Finally, vitamin B6 helps regulate hormone activity.
Safe upper limit
High dosages of vitamin B6 can occasionally lead to tingling or numbness in the hands or feet. Therefore, in the Netherlands, a maximum safe upper limit of 21 mg per day for adults is applied for vitamin supplements. Research is being conducted to determine whether these occasional cases only occur with vitamin B6 in the form of pyridoxine-HCL and not, or to a lesser extent, with pyridoxal-5’-phosphate. There are indications that only pyridoxine in high dosages is toxic to nerve cells, and not P-5’-P.
Vitamin B6 pyridoxal-5’-phosphate 20 mg from Vitals offers a generous dosage in pure, biologically active form. The raw material is contained in a plant-based capsule made from cassava and is supplemented with an excipient from rice.

Is the vit B6 from Vitals 20 mg (p5p) plant-based or synthetically made?
The vitamin B6 in Vitals is in the excellent bio-active, identical, and well-absorbable form. This vitamin B6 corresponds to the vitamin B6 found in nature, but it is manufactured in a laboratory.
Natural vitamins are substances that have originated in nature and occur as such. Synthetic vitamins are substances created in a laboratory. Although the extraction of vitamins may differ, this does not necessarily affect their efficacy, provided they have the same composition and structure.
When synthetically manufactured vitamins are nature-identical (same chemical formula and structure), the body cannot distinguish whether the vitamin in question has been derived from a plant or animal or has been produced in a laboratory. However, the form of vitamin B6 is important. For instance, vitamin B6 in the bio-active form (pyridoxal-5-phosphate) is better processed and absorbed more quickly by the body than the pyridoxine form (the initial form of vitamin B6). The pyridoxine form must be converted in the body (the liver) into pyridoxal-5-phosphate before it can be absorbed into body cells.
Hello, Can I also open this B6 capsule and take a small amount of the powder daily? I find the dosage of 1 capsule too high. Regards, Ellen
Absolutely, you can open the capsule and take a small amount of the powder daily. However, we must warn you that B vitamins don't have a pleasant taste! Consider mixing it with a juice or some yoghurt.
I consulted a naturopath. Despite having a high level of vitamin B6 in my blood, he recommended this supplement to me. According to him, there's too much B6 in my blood but not in my cells. What is your advice?
Vitamin B6 in the blood is in its inactive form (for example, as pyridoxine or pyridoxal). It is transported via the blood to the liver where it is converted into the biologically active form pyridoxal phosphate. In this form, vitamin B6 performs its functions in the body and body cells. There can be several reasons why the B6 in your blood is too high and cannot be converted in the liver. To convert vitamin B6, enzymes are needed that only work if sufficient co-factors are present. We are talking about zinc and magnesium or potassium, calcium, cobalt, and manganese. A deficiency in one of these minerals can prevent vitamin B6 from being activated and thus from entering the cell.
Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate is the most active form; by supplementing with this form, you can bypass any mineral deficiencies. The risk of B6 accumulation is thereby reduced.
To get the active vitamin B6 (pyridoxal-5-phosphate) into the cell, it must attach to a receptor on the cell wall. For this, you need the amino acid l-lysine. A deficiency in l-lysine can also cause problems in getting the active form into the cell.
