The importance of MSM for life on Earth is immense. Without MSM, life as we know it would not exist. MSM is formed naturally as part of the Earth's sulphur cycle: algae and plant plankton in the oceans absorb inorganic sulphur from seawater in large quantities and convert it into a simple organic form. When algae and plankton die, enzymes break down the organic sulphur compounds into dimethyl sulphide (DMS). This substance is volatile and does not dissolve well in water. Therefore, it accumulates high in the atmosphere, where it is converted into dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and further into methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) under the influence of ultraviolet light and ozone. DMSO and MSM are well soluble in water. They form the condensation nuclei necessary for the formation of raindrops. Without DMSO and MSM in the air, clouds would not form, and it would not rain. The roots of trees and plants can quickly and efficiently absorb DMSO and MSM from rainwater.

Production method
Although MSM is a natural substance, it would be impractical to extract MSM naturally. So many trees would have to be cut down, which would not be desirable. The raw materials currently used are DMSO, water, and hydrogen peroxide. Through a complex process, DMSO is then converted into MSM. It is crucial that the production method applied leads to a pure end product. Unfortunately, this is not always the case in MSM production. The expensive distillation method, which effectively removes any impurities that may occur in the raw materials, is absolutely preferred over the often used (much cheaper) crystallisation method.
