Milk thistle extract (silybin) supports liver function in two ways. Improved bioavailability through Phytosome® technology
The bioavailability of Milk Thistle-PS is significantly enhanced by the application of the patented Phytosome® technology from the Italian producer Indena. The term Phytosome (or phytosome) comes from the Greek word phuton (plant) and soma (body, particle). During the patented production process, the natural clumping of specific, poorly absorbable phytonutrients (such as those from milk thistle) is limited, and they are mixed with phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine) from sunflower lecithin. The active substances are not encapsulated (as in liposomes), but a homogeneous mixture of small, well-absorbable combination particles is formed. The active components from milk thistle are both lipophilic (flavonolignans) and hydrophilic (phenolic derivatives, flavonoids). Phospholipids are lipophilic on one side and hydrophilic on the other. As a result, the phytonutrients are inclined to bind to the phospholipids and form so-called phytosomes. In this way, they are absorbed extra well. Cell membranes (such as those of intestinal cells) themselves consist of a phospholipid bilayer, allowing the active components to be well absorbed (see figure 1). Studies have shown that by applying this Phytosome technology, the bioavailability of silybin from Siliphos® is 10 times greater compared to a regular milk thistle extract.

Different from liposome technology
In a liposome, the active substance is located in the centre of a small sphere with a double layer of phospholipids. With Phytosome technology, it is really a homogeneous mixture, and the active substance is not encapsulated. As a result, much fewer phospholipids are needed than with liposomes.
