Magnesium SportVitals
Magnesium Sport is the magnesium supplement for (elite) athletes
For anyone serious about sports, it's crucial to know what you're consuming. What ingredients are in your food, what are the nutritional values, but also: what is the composition and quality of the supplements you take. Equally important is knowing what you're not consuming. You don't want to ingest any unwanted substances or have anything to do with doping. That's why Vitals products are checked for contaminants and every batch of Magnesium Sport 100 mg is tested to ensure the absence of doping-related substances. This is done according to the NZVT system.1

Excellent
Magnesium Sport has exactly the same composition as Magnesium (bisglycinate) 100 mg, Vitals' most popular magnesium product. The only difference is the name and that every batch of Magnesium Sport is checked and certified for doping according to the NZVT system.
Magnesium Sport contains no less than 100 mg of highly absorbable magnesium bisglycinate per tablet (an amino acid-bound form of magnesium), supplemented with 200 mg of taurine. Especially with a magnesium supplement, it is crucial to choose the right binding form, which means how magnesium is present in the tablet or capsule (such as -bisglycinate or -citrate). Read further on about the quality differences that exist between magnesium products so you know how to make a good choice in this regard.
1 The Dutch Security System for Nutritional Supplements in Elite Sports (NZVT) is a cooperative agreement between the Doping Authority, NOC*NSF, and the trade organisation for Natural and Health Products Netherlands. This system offers the greatest possible assurance that certified supplements do not contain doping-related substances. In the NZVT database, you can check whether the product has been tested based on the batch code and best-before date. Not all products are tested every batch. The products that are tested every batch can be recognised in the database by the "infinity" symbol. For more information, see https://www.dopingautoriteit.nl/nzvt.
Why is magnesium good for athletes?
The body contains about 21 to 28 grams of magnesium. Less than 1% circulates in the blood, about 20% is in the muscles, 20% in other soft tissues and the liver, and about 60% is incorporated into the bones and teeth. Magnesium has, among other things, a positive effect on muscle function. This is important for everyone, but especially for athletes. For optimal sports performance, it is crucial that all processes involved in the body proceed as well and efficiently as possible. The large role that magnesium plays is evidenced by the fact that it is involved in more than 300 enzymatic processes. For example, magnesium is an important co-factor for enzymes involved in protein synthesis (the process by which proteins are created based on DNA) and thus contributes to the building of body protein. It also helps maintain a good electrolyte balance as it is a co-factor for many enzymes involved in maintaining an electrical potential across the cell membrane. (Cells – especially nerve and muscle cells – use the electrical charge of electrolytes to conduct electrical impulses to and from other cells, such as nerve impulses or muscle contractions.) In this way, magnesium is involved in nerve conduction and muscle contraction, and is therefore important for muscle function, including the heart muscle. Additionally, inadequate magnesium intake can lead to fatigue. In this case, magnesium can help you become fit again. It helps release energy from fats, carbohydrates, and proteins and thus supports energy levels. It is also important for brain and nerve functions that are crucial for aspects such as concentration and mood. Finally, it contributes to normal cell division and the production of cells and tissues.
Taurine
Magnesium Sport also contains 200 mg of taurine per tablet. This is an amino acid-like substance naturally found mainly in meat, fish, and shellfish. It has a direct synergistic effect with magnesium because it promotes the absorption of this mineral into the cells (magnesium is particularly active intracellularly).
Absorption of common mineral compounds
There are different magnesium compounds used in supplements. Some of these, such as the inorganic mineral compounds magnesium oxide and magnesium carbonate, are not well absorbed and have low bioavailability. When minerals (in whatever binding form, except in amino acid chelated form) enter the acidic environment of the stomach, the digestive process begins with detaching the mineral part from the chemical structure. As the mineral element progresses through the digestive process, it is naturally electrically charged. Due to this charge, it is attracted to other charged particles such as those found in vegetables, fibres, and fats. These food particles will isolate the mineral ions, making them less well absorbed and used by the body. The limited amount of free mineral ions that are still available then progresses through the digestive tract and competes with other minerals (such as calcium) to be absorbed by the intestinal wall and into the cells.
Magnesium
Benefits of amino acid chelated minerals
With magnesium in the form of magnesium bisglycinate, each magnesium particle is strongly bound (chelated) to two (bis) molecules of the amino acid glycine. This creates a kind of ring structure, with the mineral at its heart.
The chelate structure in an amino acid chelate such as magnesium bisglycinate is strong enough not to be split under the influence of gastric juice or digestive enzymes (as usually happens with other mineral compounds), but also weak enough so that the mineral element can be released once it is absorbed by the cells in the intestine. The amino acids fold around the mineral element and protect it during the digestive process and do not let go. The chelate's electrical charge is also neutral, so it doesn't get stuck to pieces of food in the stomach and intestines. The amino acid chelate therefore reaches the small intestine in its entirety, where it is absorbed as a dipeptide (a compound with two amino acids). This is very beneficial because the body can absorb amino acids (and especially dipeptides) extremely easily. Especially if they consist of the amino acid with the smallest size, namely glycine. This makes amino acid chelated minerals many times more absorbable than other mineral forms. In the epithelial tissue of the jejunum (middle part of the small intestine), the amino acid chelated mineral is brought into the mucus cells by active transport without competing with other minerals. Only in the mucus cells do metabolic processes ensure that the glycine and the mineral are split and made available for the various organs and systems in the body.
Amino acid chelates from Albion Minerals
Vitals exclusively uses genuine amino acid chelates from Albion Minerals, the expert in the field of amino acid chelates, recognisable by the trademark TRAACS®, which stands for The Real Amino Acid Chelate System. This brand was created to clearly distinguish from other, possibly inferior, unstable amino acid chelates. Albion has registered over 100 patents worldwide that guarantee the process, science, and structure of their amino acid chelated minerals. In addition, research is conducted with their minerals and quality research takes place with every batch produced. It is essential to check that chelate formation has actually occurred and that the bonds are strong enough.
Studies with magnesium bisglycinate
Several studies have confirmed the effectiveness of magnesium bisglycinate. Some of these compared the absorbability of magnesium bisglycinate with different magnesium compounds, such as magnesium carbonate, magnesium sulphate, and magnesium oxide. Magnesium bisglycinate was absorbed significantly faster and better than the other forms of magnesium. Magnesium oxide performed by far the worst.
