This is due to the harmful substances that can be present due to environmental pollution (especially dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and heavy metals such as methylmercury). Required EPA/DHA dosage for optimal omega-3 fatty acid status
The omega-3 fatty acid status refers to the amount of EPA and DHA present in the body. Nowadays, it is quite possible to measure the omega-3 fatty acid status. This can be done, among other things, by means of a finger-prick blood test that determines the so-called omega-3 index. The omega-3 index refers to the percentage of EPA and DHA of the total fatty acid composition in the cell membrane of red blood cells and is a reliable measure of the omega-3 fatty acid status. The omega-3 index correlates well with the level of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids in tissues and organs, including the heart.

There is increasing evidence that an omega-3 index of at least 8% is optimal. Research shows that for many people, especially those with a Western diet (which typically involves a high intake of omega-6 fatty acids), it is necessary to consume high doses of EPA/DHA to achieve this. With a low omega-3 index (approximately 4.5%, which is a common value in Western countries), supplementation of 2 grams of EPA/DHA generally ensures that the omega-3 index is around 8% after about three months. Natural triglyceride form
Fats in food, and also in fish oil, naturally occur in the form of triglycerides. These consist of three fatty acid molecules bound to one glycerol molecule. In the case of unprocessed fish oil, one of these is EPA or DHA, and the remaining two consist of other fatty acids. As a result, the natural concentration of EPA/DHA in fish oil is no higher than about 30%. For fish oil supplements in softgels, higher concentrations are desired (up to 80-90%) because the space in a softgel is limited. During the production process, the fatty acid chains are split from the glycerol and the EPA/DHA fatty acids are isolated through extraction, allowing for higher concentrations and different ratios of EPA and DHA to be achieved through further processing. One of the advantages of fish oil in liquid form is that there are far fewer space limitations. You can easily consume more of the oil with a teaspoon or measuring spoon. This means that the natural concentration of omega-3 in the used fish oil suffices, and additional production steps to increase the concentration of EPA and DHA are not necessary. Another advantage of a liquid fish oil supplement is that you can easily vary the dosage, for instance, if you use the product with different family members.
