Iodine is predominantly found in the sea in nature. On land, the amount of iodine is very unevenly distributed. The best natural dietary sources of iodine are therefore all sea-derived products, such as fish, shellfish, and seaweed. Iodine Organic is derived from organic knotted wrack, which is naturally a rich source of iodine. The product is standardised to contain 150 mcg of iodine per capsule.

Quality
The type of seaweed used in Iodine Organic is knotted wrack (Ascophyllum nodosum). It is organically and sustainably harvested by producer Seaweed & Co from the clean sea around the Hebrides (a group of islands off the west coast of Scotland). After harvesting, the knotted wrack is processed using a patented production method that preserves the original nutritional value of the seaweed. Additionally, each batch is analysed for iodine content and purity to ensure it meets the highest quality standards. The iodine content in seaweed can vary greatly. Both too low and too high iodine content is undesirable, so it is important to choose a seaweed product where the content is consistently determined. Furthermore, Seaweed & Co is the only seaweed producer in the world to offer DNA Authenticated Seaweed™, where the origin and high quality of their specific knotted wrack are confirmed through DNA testing by an external party.

This iodine product is a 'whole food' and not an extract. The capsule contains the 'whole' knotted wrack, with traces of other naturally occurring minerals alongside iodine. The knotted wrack is organically certified based on the water quality and the sustainability of the cultivation techniques. The water is routinely analysed. An important part of the sustainable cultivation technique is that only the top part of the seaweed plant is used. The entire plant is not removed, preventing it from ceasing to grow after 2 to 4 years. This is further monitored and controlled by the 'Crown Estate Scottish Environmental Protection Agency' and 'Scottish Natural Heritage'.

Function of iodine in the body
Iodine is an essential trace element that plays an important role in thyroid function and is needed for the production of thyroid hormones. Through these hormones (thyroxine/T4 and triiodothyronine/T3), iodine contributes to normal energy metabolism, partly by supporting the activity of certain enzymes involved in releasing energy from fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Iodine also contributes to normal cognitive function (such as memory, concentration, and learning ability) by supporting the function of the thyroid gland. Finally, iodine is important for the nervous system and the skin.

The active ingredients of organic food supplements are guaranteed to be of natural origin and not synthetically manufactured.
