Collagen Formula Pro is the result of a quest for the best forms of collagen, of the highest quality and with the most solid backing. This product contains undenatured collagen types I, V, and X from eggshell membrane (Ovomet®) and undenatured collagen type II (UC-II®). The formula is completed with a superior form of vitamin C (Ester-C®), which is important for collagen production and beneficial for cartilage. These ingredients form a strong trio whose components complement each other very well.

Collagen
Collagen comes from the Greek word κολλώ, meaning 'to bind together'. Collagen fibres are the main extracellular proteins in the human body, providing structure, strength, cohesion, and elasticity. Collagen fibres are part of various types of connective tissues, such as connective tissue, cartilage, and bones. There are as many as 28 types of collagen. The most common form in the human body is collagen type I, found in tendons, ligaments, and bone tissue. Other forms, such as collagen types II, V, and X, are more specialised and occur in specific areas in smaller quantities. Cartilage, for example, mainly consists of type II (and a small amount of type X). All forms of collagen share a common structure. Collagen fibres are composed of bundles of collagen fibrils, which in turn are made up of strands of collagen molecules. These molecules consist of three protein chains arranged in a special triple helix structure. Collagen for use in dietary supplements is always of animal origin, as collagen does not naturally occur in plants.

Undenatured collagen type II
Collagen Formula Pro contains collagen type II (from chicken cartilage) under the brand name UC-II®. This collagen is produced by Interhealth, a renowned American supplier. Interhealth has invested heavily in the scientific backing of this product. Several human studies have been conducted with UC-II® yielding good results. A significant distinguishing feature of UC-II® is that it is an 'undenatured' form of collagen type II. This means that the collagen is still present in its original form in the product and retains the same spatial (helical) structure that can be recognised by the body. This is in contrast to 'denatured' collagen type II, also available as a supplement, which has been processed through a hydrolysis step (where the collagen is split into smaller peptides through a chemical reaction with water). This changes the spatial structure of the molecule, which is unfavourable. For comparison: a daily dose of only 40 mg of UC-II® with undenatured collagen type II is needed, whereas several grams of denatured collagen type II are typically required.

Eggshell membrane
The inside of an egg contains a thin membrane rich in nutrients that support the development and protection of the chick. This membrane is attached to the eggshell and is usually lost during regular egg consumption. Eggnovo, the Spanish producer of Ovomet® (the brand name of the eggshell membrane ingredient in Collagen Formula Pro), has found a way to make use of eggshells from chicken eggs, which are typically considered a by-product. Through a natural production process based on water extraction, the membrane is separated from the inside of the egg and processed for use in dietary supplements. This mild production method ensures that the beneficial properties of the eggshell membrane are preserved, including the spatial structure of the collagen present. Ovomet® is rich in undenatured collagen type I in its potent form. It also contains undenatured collagen types V and X. As a true natural product, Ovomet® also contains other components such as elastin (approx. 20%), hyaluronic acid (approx. 4%), glucosamine (approx. 2%), chondroitin (approx. 2%), keratin (approx. 1%), lysozyme (approx. 1%), and more than 500 different types of proteins. Several human studies have also been conducted with Ovomet®.

Vitamin C
Collagen Formula Pro is supplemented with vitamin C as Ester-C®. This patented raw material consists of vitamin C in the non-acidic form of calcium ascorbate. It also contains several natural metabolites of vitamin C (such as threonate), making Ester-C® unique. The benefits of Ester-C® include faster absorption and longer retention in the body than regular vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid. It therefore has more time to be effective, allowing for a lower dosage. The various beneficial effects of vitamin C on health are extensively documented in the scientific literature. Vitamin C fits perfectly in this collagen formula as it contributes to normal collagen formation, being a co-factor for three different enzymes involved in collagen synthesis. These three enzymes catalyse the attachment of a hydroxyl (OH) group to the amino acids L-lysine and L-proline (which are part of the collagen molecule) to stabilise the special triple helix structure of collagen. Normal collagen formation is important for the production, structure, and normal function of cartilage, as well as for the composition of bone tissue.
