In nature, approximately five hundred amino acids are found. Twenty of these are amino acids that serve as building blocks for proteins in the human body, and these are referred to as 'fundamental amino acids'. These fundamental amino acids can be further divided into the categories 'essential', 'semi-essential', and 'non-essential'. 'Essential' means that the body cannot produce the amino acid itself from other amino acids, and that one is entirely dependent on food to meet the daily requirement.
This product contains L-5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), derived from the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia. 5-HTP is the already converted and biologically active form of the essential amino acid L-tryptophan. It is the direct precursor of the neurotransmitter serotonin and the hormone melatonin.
Preference for 5-HTP over L-tryptophan
There is more than 30 years of experience with dietary supplements containing 5-HTP. This form is excellently absorbed, even when taken with meals, and easily crosses the blood-brain barrier. 5-HTP does not suffer from competition with other amino acids. It does not require a (shared) transport molecule like other amino acids (including L-tryptophan). Another advantage over L-tryptophan is that 5-HTP does not need to be converted first in the body. Moreover, more than 95% of ingested L-tryptophan is converted into proteins and other molecules, leaving only a small portion available as a precursor for serotonin and melatonin. For these reasons, 5-HTP is preferred over L-tryptophan and can suffice with significantly lower dosages.

Hello, can I mix the 5-HTP 100mg from Vitals as a powder into my yoghurt? Or is that not possible and do I need to swallow the capsule whole? Thanks in advance.

I am using Citalopram. Could you check for me if I can use 5-HTP at the same time?

This is because both 5-HTP and Citalopram affect the serotonin balance in your brain. Taking them simultaneously can potentially lead to an excess of serotonin, which may cause serotonin syndrome, a serious condition.
It is very important that you only take this combination under strict medical supervision. We advise you to contact your doctor or pharmacist before using 5-HTP alongside your current medication. They can provide you with the best guidance and advice based on your personal medical history and current medication.
