During pregnancy, your nutritional needs change. Your body needs more of certain vitamins and minerals to support both you and your baby properly. By choosing a varied diet with unprocessed, nourishing foods, you give yourself a strong foundation. Think vegetables, fruit, fish, meat, pulses, dairy, nuts, seeds and wholegrains.
There are a number of nutrients that are especially important during pregnancy:

• Folic acid: naturally found in green leafy vegetables such as spinach, broad beans and kale. Wholegrain products, dairy and meat also contribute.
• Omega 3 (DHA): an important fatty acid that contributes to the development of your baby’s brain and eyes. The dietary advice is to eat oily fish twice a week, such as salmon, trout or tilapia.
• Calcium: found in dairy, green vegetables and wholegrain products.
• Iodine: mainly found in fish, bread, eggs and dairy products.
• Iron: animal sources such as meat and fish are well absorbed, but plant-based foods such as lentils, spinach and wholegrain products are also valuable.

Also be mindful of products you’re better off avoiding during pregnancy, such as alcohol, raw meat or fish, liver (and liver products), certain fish species, liquorice and soya products. Also go easy on caffeine: a maximum of 2 cups of coffee per day (up to 200 mg).
