During pregnancy and the breastfeeding period, your calcium requirement increases. This is because your baby is entirely dependent on your calcium intake to build strong bones and teeth. A considerable amount of calcium is passed on daily via the placenta and later through breast milk. Your body can adapt to this to some extent, but adequate intake through diet remains essential to support both you and your baby as well as possible.
