Ordinary vitamin C as ascorbic acid is the acidic form and at higher dosages has the disadvantage of potentially irritating the gastrointestinal tract and causing diarrhoea.

Buffered vitamin C, on the other hand, loses its acidic form by binding (buffering) with calcium and magnesium, resulting in ascorbate instead of ascorbic acid. We need much less of this to optimise vitamin C absorption and health.
