Precursor to serotonin
The 5-HTP 100 mg product contains a uniquely high-concentrated Griffonia simplicifolia extract with no less than 30% of the active substance 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). The Griffonia shrub is a plant species commonly found in Central and West Africa. The seeds of this crop are rich in 5-HTP. This essential amino acid easily crosses the blood-brain barrier and is converted in the brain into the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is the precursor to the hormone melatonin.
5-HTP is an already converted form of tryptophan. The issue with tryptophan, however, is the ongoing competition with other amino acids for absorption into the brain (Fernstrom, 2013). Tryptophan must compete with amino acids such as leucine, valine, tyrosine, and isoleucine. In practice, this means that tryptophan can only be converted into serotonin at an average rate of 1/5 (Fernstrom, 2013).
