Yes, that is correct. Black pepper extract helps a bit, but not significantly. The latest generation of turmeric supplements has therefore been specially formulated to ensure much higher absorption.

The best product currently available, the Curcumine SLCP, contains "curcumin in a lipid-like particle (Solid Lipid Curcumin Particle, abbreviated SLCP) made from specially selected fats that naturally occur in our diet. In the intestine, this particle is absorbed in its entirety and transported with other dietary fats in chylomicrons via the lymphatic system. This initially bypasses the liver, where normally the majority of curcumin inactivation occurs."

The panic surrounding HPMC is based on a misunderstanding. HPMC is a cellulose fibre. This purified fibre, derived from wood pulp, has absolutely no unhealthy effects when ingested via the stomach, but when INHALED, for example, in a wood or paper factory, it can indeed damage sensitive lung alveoli. Therefore, individuals working in such factories should wear masks, and the workplace must be well-ventilated.

This is not relevant for capsules made from HPMC. You can safely sniff such a capsule. HPMC is only harmful with repeated, prolonged exposure to cellulose fibres in the air.

The pamphlets about E-numbers do not make this distinction and label the substance as undesirable without providing scientific evidence for this.

HPMC is a vegetarian alternative to gelatin (from bone meal). All manufacturers of dietary supplements use this, as many customers are vegetarian, and HPMC is completely safe.
