That depends on the purpose. Vitamin A (retinol) and Beta-Carotene 7 mg each have unique properties.

Beta-carotene can be converted into Vitamin A by the body, but it is unclear how much is actually converted, as this varies from person to person, with factors such as age and gallbladder function playing a role. If a doctor has diagnosed a Vitamin A deficiency, it is therefore better to take pure Vitamin A in an exact dosage.

If there is no established deficiency, it is better to use beta-carotene, as this is safer than ready-made Vitamin A. Beta-carotene is best taken with a meal that contains fat, to stimulate the release of bile.

Multivitamins always contain a safe dose of Vitamin A (usually around 800 mcg per daily dosage). Toxic symptoms only occur with prolonged intake of at least 7500 mcg, so you will be well below that with all supplements available in the Netherlands.

Beta-Carotene 7 mg (7 mg beta-carotene per daily dose) indeed comes from an algae, the Dunaliella salina.

The issue of beta-carotene and smoking is quite complex. This article discusses the studies themselves and explains why the conclusions drawn are premature, or at least do not pertain to natural beta-carotene (in contrast to synthetic beta-carotene):

Nevertheless, it is certainly advisable to quit smoking permanently as soon as possible.

A possible alternative to beta-carotene (also derived from an algae) is astaxanthin.

Beta carotene can help prepare the skin for sun exposure, as it can protect the skin from harmful external influences, such as UV rays. However, it does not create new pigment.
