Why add a harmful sweetener??
I posed the question to the manufacturer. This was the response:
"The sorbitol in Orthica Omega-3 Krill Oil has been added to slightly neutralise the fish oil taste. The moisture-retaining and stabilising properties of sorbitol also make it a suitable sweetener to include in such a product.
Moreover, we are very careful about which (sweet) substances we use in our products. There are no adverse effects known from sorbitol, especially in the small amount we add (less than 10% of the total product).
The only known adverse effects of sorbitol are laxative effects, at doses many times higher than in our product."
The label on this product states that you should not take it if you are trying to conceive or are pregnant. However, I read everywhere that it is healthy and that you should indeed take omega-3 from krill. So what is it? And why should you or shouldn't you take it?
This statement relates to the sweetener sorbitol in the product. On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with using this product if you are generally trying to conceive. In this case, it means that you are trying to become pregnant within a few weeks or months.
In fact, there is no evidence that the use of sorbitol during pregnancy itself is harmful. Especially in such a low amount as in this product, it is actually not a problem at all. Therefore, the statement on the packaging can be seen as a general disclaimer (which appears on almost all of Orthica's products).
It is indeed perfectly fine and even recommended to take extra omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy, for example in the form of krill oil, fish oil, or algal oil.
