Is there too much folic acid in this multivitamin? I am looking for a good multi for my children aged 3 and 5. Unfortunately, they find the Vitals multi unpalatable, which seemed the best option to me. What would be a good alternative? They are already getting extra Vitamin D.
On 26 may 2020 by Customer serviceThe New Care multi for children does indeed contain a slightly higher dosage of folic acid. The recommended daily amount (RDA) for children aged 1-3 years is 200 mcg, and for children aged 4-6 years, it is 300 mcg.
However, the RDA is the minimum dosage the body needs to avoid deficiencies, and optimal dosages are usually somewhat higher. Therefore, New Care has included a bit more folic acid in this children's multi, as well as extra amounts of several other B vitamins, to better meet the needs of growing children. Folic acid and vitamin B12 contribute to a normal cell division process, support the immune system, and play a role in the production of red blood cells and proteins.
The Elke Dag Junior from Vitals is indeed a very good multivitamin for children, but not all children find the chewable tablets appealing. The New Care multi for children could serve as an alternative, as could the Viridikid Multivitamin & minerals from Viridian:
