What is lactoferrin?
Lactoferrin is a naturally occurring iron-binding protein found in the mucous membranes, respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal tract. The term ‘lacto’ refers to its richest source: milk.
As humans, we receive large amounts of lactoferrin shortly after birth through colostrum, the first breast milk. Even later breast milk still contains a significant amount of lactoferrin compared to what we receive from dairy. Our body can also produce lactoferrin itself.
