Agaricus is an extensive genus of fungi, with around 300 different species found in various parts of the world. Some species are edible and have been used as food for centuries in different cultures, while other species are poisonous and can cause serious health problems in humans and animals.
The best-known and most widely consumed edible species in this genus is Agaricus bisporus, better known as the white button mushroom.
