More about this product
Chia seeds originally hail from Mexico. The chia plant belongs to the mint family but is also related to sage. For centuries, they have been a food source for the indigenous peoples of America. Aztec warriors consumed chia during hunts, and other traditions speak of Southwestern Indians who mixed chia seeds with water. It is possible that the Spanish conquerors (the conquistadors) brought the seeds to Spain around 1521, following the conquest of Mexico. The botanical name Salvia Hispanica was given to chia in the 18th century by the botanist Carl von Linné. Chia only grew in the wild in Spain, and he mistakenly believed it was a native species.
Chia is cultivated in many South American countries, primarily due to the extremely high amount of omega-3 fatty acids in chia seeds. Omega-3 fatty acids are crucial for humans, especially since the body cannot produce the Omega 3 from chia seeds on its own. Additionally, chia contains several vitamins, such as niacin, riboflavin, thiamine, and vitamin A, as well as minerals like potassium, calcium, and zinc, antioxidants, and high-quality proteins. Compared to other seeds and grains, chia seeds offer the highest source of protein (around 20 percent protein).
Chia seeds are sown in spring. The plant is preferably planted in areas without heavy rainfall because it easily rots. The plant reaches a maximum height of one metre and is easily recognisable by its many blue flowers. The seeds are harvested in the autumn.
Chia seeds can be eaten raw or dried and are also used as a thickening agent or as an ingredient in sauces. Add chia seeds to breakfast cereals, yoghurt, or juice. It is also suitable for adding to bread dough, keeping the bread fresher for longer!
