Lemongrass, also known as Citronella grass, is an aromatic grass species that can grow up to 1.5 metres tall and has a fast-growing nature, which can deplete the soil quickly due to its extensive root system. This rapid growth allows it to be harvested 3-4 times a year. The essential oil is distilled from partially dried and cut grass of various Cymbopogon species. After distillation, the grass serves as animal feed. The main component of the oil is citral, a substance with a strong lemon scent. Lemongrass is used in large quantities as a flavour enhancer in foods and has a powerful, fresh aroma.
Lemongrass has a calming effect on the nervous system. It promotes optimism, dispels bad moods and negative thoughts, and enhances concentration.
Additionally, Lemongrass is a purifying oil.
