Supplements

Why does the colour or scent of my supplement sometimes differ?

It's normal for supplements to vary slightly in colour, scent, or taste from one production batch to another.

  • Natural ingredients: Many supplements contain natural ingredients such as herbs, algae, or fruits. These can vary slightly in colour and scent depending on the harvest or season. This does not affect the quality or efficacy.
  • Production process: Different production batches may show minimal colour variations, especially in products without artificial colourings.
  • Storage: How you store your supplements can affect their colour. Always store them in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight.

Is the difference extreme or does the product smell odd? Please contact us at info@vitaminstore.nl.

What does 'RDA' or '% RI' mean on the label?

RDA and RI are both terms for the recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals.

RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance)
This is the Dutch term for the recommended daily allowance.

RI (Reference Intake)
This is the European term. RDA and RI mean the same and indicate how much of the recommended daily allowance a product contains.

Example
“Vitamin C: 80 mg (100% RI)” means that with this product you get the full recommended daily allowance of vitamin C.

What do the percentages mean?

  • 100% RI = exactly the recommended daily allowance
  • Less than 100% RI = the supplement contains part of the daily requirement
  • More than 100% RI = the supplement contains more than the daily requirement

Example
“Vitamin D: 25 mcg (500% RI)” means 5 times the recommended daily allowance. This is often safe and may even be recommended in cases of deficiency.

Note
The RI is based on average adults. Your personal needs may be higher or lower. If in doubt, we recommend consulting a doctor or nutritionist.

How do I store my supplements?

Proper storage ensures that your supplements remain as effective as possible:

General storage tips

  • Store supplements at room temperature (15-25°C)
  • Keep them dry - avoid moisture (so not in the bathroom!)
  • Protect from direct sunlight
  • Always seal containers tightly after use
  • Keep out of reach of children

Specific supplements

  • Probiotics: often need to be kept cool (refrigerator), check the label
  • Omega-3/fish oil: store in a dark and cool place, can be refrigerated
  • Vitamin D drops: protect from light
  • Powdered supplements: ensure they are sealed tightly to keep out moisture

Each product will have the recommended storage conditions listed. Follow these instructions for the best quality.

How long are supplements good for after opening?

The BBE date (best before end) indicates until when the manufacturer guarantees optimal quality. This is not an expiry date: after the BBE, the effectiveness may decrease, but many supplements are still safe to use - provided they are stored properly (dry, dark, cool).

How long do supplements remain good?

  • Vitamins & minerals (tablets/capsules): often usable for several months to a year after BBE.
  • Amino acids: usually 1–2 years after BBE.
  • Herbal supplements: often 3–4 years after BBE.
  • Powdered supplements: watch for clumping and odour; only use if the product is dry and appears normal.
  • Probiotics: do not use after the BBE date.
  • Omega-3/fish oil: do not use after BBE; these can quickly oxidise and develop a sharp, bitter oil smell.

After opening

Most supplements can be used until the BBE date, as long as they are kept well sealed and stored in a cool, dry place. Some liquid products and oils have a shorter shelf life after opening – always check the label.

When not to use anymore?

  • Musty, sour or unpleasant oil smell
  • Clumping, moisture spots, mould
  • Discolouration or unusual taste
  • Changed texture

Preferably use supplements before the BBE date. Not sure? Email us at info@vitaminstore.nl.

I have difficulty swallowing, can I break the tablets or open a capsule?

Yes, you can break tablets in half or crush them into powder using a tablet crusher or mortar and pestle. Capsules can be carefully opened and mixed with water, juice, yoghurt, or a smoothie if needed.
