In 1998, the Japanese company Japan Bio Science Laboratories (JBSL) succeeded in isolating nattokinase from fermented GMO-free soybeans through a patented production process. Their nattokinase bears the brand name NSK-SD®, which stands for Natural Super Kinase-Spray Dried. One capsule of Vitals Nattokinase-NSK contains 100 mg of NSK-SD®. This corresponds to an enzyme activity of 2000 Fibrinolytic Units (FU). 2000 FU approximates the amount of nattokinase one would ingest with an average portion of about 50 grams of natto. Nattokinase-NSK does not contain vitamin K2. This is available separately if desired.
It turns out to be far from simple to produce pure nattokinase with good enzyme activity. Several laboratory tests are needed to accurately determine the quality of a nattokinase supplement.
