This product contains 100 mg of magnesium in the well-absorbed, organic form of magnesium citrate. Many magnesium products are in tablet form because they can contain more. These tablets are often large as magnesium takes up a lot of space. Not everyone finds such large tablets pleasant to use. Therefore, Vitals offers this product in the form of a capsule that is easier to swallow. If desired, the capsule can also be opened to mix the contents into something else.

The capsule shell is made from pullulan, which is derived from cassava (an edible root tuber, also known as manioc). The capsule utilises rice-based excipients, necessary to properly fill the capsule.

Function of magnesium in the body
The body contains approximately 21 to 28 grams of magnesium. Less than 1% circulates in the blood, about 20% is found in the muscles, 20% in other soft tissues and the liver, and about 60% is incorporated into the bones and teeth. Magnesium is therefore good for the muscles and important for maintaining strong bones and teeth. Furthermore, it is involved in more than 300 enzymatic processes. For instance, magnesium is an important co-factor for enzymes involved in protein synthesis (the process by which proteins are made based on DNA). It also helps maintain a good electrolyte balance as it is a co-factor for many enzymes involved in maintaining an electrical potential across the cell membrane. (Cells – especially nerve and muscle cells – use the electrical charge of electrolytes to conduct electrical impulses to and from other cells, such as nerve impulses or muscle contractions.) In this way, magnesium is involved in nerve conduction and muscle contraction, and is thus important for muscle function, including the heart muscle. Additionally, inadequate magnesium intake can lead to fatigue. Magnesium can help in this case to regain fitness. It helps release energy from fats, carbohydrates, and proteins, thus supporting energy levels. It is also important for brain and nerve functions, which are crucial for aspects such as concentration, memory, and mood. Moreover, it contributes to normal cell division and the creation of cells and tissues.
