What are fibres?
Dietary fibres are long chains of carbohydrates, consisting of 10 or more carbohydrate building blocks (monosaccharides), which cannot be broken down by digestive enzymes in the human small intestine. Dietary fibres are an important part of a varied and balanced diet. Fibres can be divided into two categories: water-soluble and non-water-soluble fibres. Examples of water-soluble fibres include guar bean fibres (also known as galactomannan), inulin (FOS), and psyllium fibres. Non-water-soluble fibres include wheat bran and fibres from other (whole grain) cereals. Water-soluble fibres are also known as prebiotics because they can be fermented by the gut flora. The better a fibre dissolves, the better it is fermented. Fermentation by the gut flora produces metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids (including butyrate, propionate, acetate). However, it is important that this fermentation process does not occur too quickly, as this can cause gas formation.
Sunfiber® by Taiyo
Sunfiber® has the ideal properties of excellent water solubility and not too rapid but complete fermentation. This makes the product very user-friendly compared to, for example, psyllium fibres, which dissolve significantly less well in water, and inulin, which is fermented very quickly. Taiyo is the producer of Sunfiber® and a global market leader and expert in guar bean fibres. Normally, fibres from guar beans form a gel in water. Therefore, Taiyo has developed a special production process to make the fibres dissolve better in water. The reason for this gel formation is that guar bean fibres naturally consist of very long chains of carbohydrates. Through a fermentation process (by adding a natural enzyme), the long chains are, as it were, pre-digested into shorter chains in the factory, which are much more soluble. However, the carbohydrate chains must not become too short, as they would otherwise ferment too quickly in the gut. Taiyo's unique production process ensures the optimal chain length and gives Sunfiber® its ideal properties. Moreover, the Sunfiber® in Guar Bean Fibres Organic is entirely made from organically grown guar beans.
