This multi is very well received. Good concentrations of vitamins. Highly recommended.
Once again, yet another attempt by manufacturers to launch a nearly perfect multivitamin onto the market, but the mission has failed yet again! I am incredibly disappointed. For years, I have been searching for an affordable, ideal multivitamin, but it simply does not exist (yet). I am starting to believe more and more that there is some sort of conspiracy among producers ... The platinum from Vitals seems promising, but if you are as critical as I am, then I find the price far too high, and it does not meet the needs of the average person. With two capsules a day and for the price they are asking, I expect to receive sufficient zinc and copper. Here, you only get 7.5 mg of zinc and 250 mcg of copper per two capsules per day?! What you do get is a high intake of vitamin D, as well as K2. I would have preferred D3 to be lower, around 40 mcg per day and 90 mcg of K2. Then you could increase the copper and zinc levels and possibly also reduce the price, which is currently €0.83 per tablet! I deliberately give 1 star because manufacturers are easily capable of bringing an affordable and good multivitamin to the market, yet they (refuse?) to do so for market-related reasons. Shameful.
Vitals’ Every Day multis are led by Every Day Platinum. We use the addition ‘Platinum’ for the highest-dosed, most complete variant in a series. And that certainly applies to this multi, where the most optimal dosages are achieved with two tablets per day. It is the first choice for anyone who wants the very best.
A major challenge when formulating a multivitamin and mineral supplement is the limited space in a tablet. In particular, certain important macro minerals often lose out, such as magnesium, calcium and potassium. Of course, price also plays an important role. This often comes at the expense of important, but costly nutrients such as vitamin K2 and Q10. When developing Every Day Platinum, more room was created by opting for two tablets per day. This means there is no need to take various other basic supplements alongside it to still reach the most desirable daily dosages. The result is a multi with generous amounts of, among others, magnesium (100 mg), calcium (200 mg), potassium (300 mg) and vitamin C (400 mg), as well as high dosages of vitamin K2 (180 mcg) and vitamin D3 (50 mcg). Plus the addition of special nutrients such as lutein, zeaxanthin, meso-zeaxanthin, taurine, acetyl-L-carnitine, alpha-lipoic acid, Q10 and PQQ.
For whom
Every Day Platinum is for adults and older people who benefit from the higher dosages and who do not want to have to take a separate calcium, magnesium, potassium and/or vitamin C, D or K supplement in addition to their multi. Ideal for supporting an active lifestyle (busy life, demanding job, physical work, sport) or for doing everything possible to grow old as healthily as possible.
Based on recent data and insights
Every Day Platinum is a carefully designed multi with essential micronutrients and special additions. Its composition uses well-absorbed substances and compound forms, in the right proportions and in dosages that matter. For each nutrient, taking into account the average intake of adults and older people in the Netherlands. And taking into account the estimated daily requirement to support or promote optimal health. This considered the substantiation for the recommended daily amounts (RDAs1), but where necessary this was deviated from based on advancing (orthomolecular) insights obtained from (recent) scientific research. Naturally, choices have to be made, because only a limited amount fits into a tablet and the price cannot become too high. Every Day Platinum is very well substantiated, excels in many respects and will stand up brilliantly to comparison with other multis.
1 The term RDA is used here because it is still the best-known term, but nowadays it has been replaced by the term RI (reference intake). These are legal guideline values established by the European Commission. These guideline values indicate the amount of vitamins and minerals an adult needs on average. No distinction is made based on age, sex, or specific circumstances. The amount of vitamins and minerals in a food supplement is stated on the label as a percentage (%) of the RI. However, the RIs may differ from the recommended amounts as established by the Health Council.
B vitamins in optimal forms and dosages
Every Day Platinum contains generous yet responsible amounts of B vitamins. Careful consideration has been given to daily requirements and the average intake and distribution. This also takes into account the extent to which the body is able to convert the various B vitamins, the latest scientific insights and safe upper limits.
Every Day Platinum contains the biologically active (co-enzymatic) forms of vitamin B2 (riboflavin-5’-phosphate), B6 (pyridoxal-5’-phosphate), B12 (methyl- and adenosylcobalamin) and folic acid (5-methyltetrahydrofolate glucosamine salt). These are the forms used by the body and research shows they have higher biological availability in the body.
Folic acid as 5-methyltetrahydrofolate
Folic acid (pteroylmonoglutamic acid), which is usually used in food supplements for reasons of stability, is a synthetic form that does not occur in nature in this way. In food it occurs as folate. Folic acid must be converted by the body into tetrahydrofolate and then into 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). Research shows that this complex conversion process is far from optimal in a substantial group of people. Supplementation with 5-MTHF bypasses this problem.
Every Day Platinum uses the superior form 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, bound to a glucosamine salt (brand name Quatrefolic®). This binding with glucosamine salt (from a plant source) makes it possible to keep the biologically active form stable and ensures optimal absorption. Studies show that Quatrefolic® has higher water solubility, stability and biological availability. In addition, 5-MTHF is able to cross the blood–brain barrier, unlike the ‘regular’ (synthetic) form of folic acid.
Vitamin B12 as methyl- and adenosylcobalamin
The absorption of vitamin B12 from food is a complex process. In addition, there are indications that the RDA (or RI) of 2.5 mcg per day has been estimated too low and the requirement of healthy adults and older people can vary and rise to well over 20 mcg per day. Because of the safety of vitamin B12 supplementation and the sometimes difficult absorption of B12 from food and supplements, Every Day Platinum contains no less than 40 mcg of vitamin B12 in the biologically active forms methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin.
Many B12 products and multis contain cyanocobalamin, which is a cheaper, synthetic form of vitamin B12 that does not occur in nature in this way and must be converted by the body into the active forms. In doing so, the cyanide part is detached from the cobalamin and must then be cleared by the body. Studies therefore show that vitamin B12 in the form of methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin has higher biological availability than cyanocobalamin.
Vitamin D
In recent years, European government institutions have determined that the level for an adequate intake of vitamin D from food needed to be higher (15 mcg) and that the maximum permitted dosage could be increased (100 mcg). In the Netherlands they are still cautious and indicate that 10 mcg is sufficient and that the maximum amount is 75 mcg. Strangely enough, the RDA/RI has remained stuck at 5 mcg. But in the orthomolecular world, the importance of higher dosages has been known for quite some time. Leading vitamin D experts advise that the vitamin D level (calcidiol level) should be at least 75 nmol/l. To maintain such a vitamin D level, an oral dose of vitamin D3 is estimated to be 25–75 mcg per day. Every Day Platinum therefore contains a generous dosage of 50 mcg per two tablets.
Vitamin K
Every Day Platinum contains 45 mcg vitamin K1 and 180 mcg vitamin K2. Vitamin K1 is mainly absorbed by the liver and ensures activation of clotting factors, whereas vitamin K2 is distributed much more across body tissues. The conventionally established RDA for vitamin K is based on the amount needed for normal blood clotting. It did not consider the optimal dosage for the other, very important functions of vitamin K. Such as ensuring that calcium is properly absorbed and ends up in the right place, namely in the bones. And the regular advice also makes no distinction between vitamin K1 and K2. Vitamin K2 is absorbed no less than 10x better and has much greater biological availability than vitamin K1. Therefore, vitamin K2 is far more effective in achieving an optimal vitamin K status and is superior to vitamin K1. Vitamin K2 is also much more effective than vitamin K1 in activating specific vitamin K-dependent enzymes. It is these activated enzymes that ensure calcium finds its way to the bones. Research has shown that 180 mcg vitamin K2 is the optimal daily dosage. And research has shown that it is important to maintain bone health and not wait until it is too late.
Stability of vitamin K2
Vitamin K2 appears to be a very sensitive substance. Particularly in combination with calcium and/or magnesium, the level of this vitamin in a tablet or capsule declines rapidly. Using vitamin K2 in a product with high dosages of calcium and/or magnesium is technically a real challenge. Vitals therefore uses a high-quality K2 ingredient under the brand name K2Vital Delta, which is stable even in a formula with a lot of these minerals. A patented micro-encapsulation process is used, in which the fat-soluble K2 particles are protected with two layers (gum arabic and starch) against air, light and interaction with other ingredients. Vitals commissioned an independent laboratory to investigate the stability of this K2Vital Delta, as well as other brands of vitamin K2, specifically in combination with the ingredients used in Vitals products. The conclusions were that protecting the K2 is absolutely necessary, that the K2 content remained stable with K2Vital Delta, and that it was superior to the other K2 ingredients.
High dosages of natural calcium and magnesium from the sea
A special feature of this multi is that it contains high dosages of calcium and magnesium, so these do not need to be taken as separate products alongside it. Very convenient. And the source of these minerals is also special: they are from the Aquamin® brand and come from the sea. The magnesium (Aquamin Magnesium) is obtained from the seawater of the Irish Sea, and studies show that it is particularly well absorbed in the body. In addition to about 35% elemental magnesium, the raw material also contains small amounts of more than 70 trace elements. The calcium (Aquamin Calcium) comes from a red algae called Lithothamnium calcareum. This type of algae absorbs minerals and trace elements from the sea and stores them. When alive it has a beautiful red/pink colour, but when it dies it calcifies and turns white or light grey. Only calcified red algae is harvested, from the waters along the coast of Iceland. In addition to 32% calcium, the raw material also contains 3% magnesium and small amounts of more than 70 trace elements. The synergistic effect of the natural trace element profile of this calcium and magnesium may partly explain the better absorption and the impressive studies conducted with it.
Potassium also well represented
Potassium is often one of the first minerals to be sacrificed when a multivitamin and mineral supplement is formulated. This is because the daily requirement for potassium is large (around 3,500 mg per day for adults) and not that much fits into a tablet. So you often see no potassium in multis or very low dosages. But in Every Day Platinum there is also room for no less than 300 mg potassium! This is fairly unique and yet very important. Because alongside the many regular recommendations to watch salt intake (sodium), studies and articles from the orthomolecular corner also advise thinking about increasing potassium intake. In addition, the recent food consumption survey shows that daily intake in the Netherlands among adults averages around 3,200 mg, while the recommended amount is 3,500 mg. So it is certainly no luxury to get an extra 300 mg potassium daily via a multi. Potassium has a beneficial effect on maintaining normal blood pressure, and this effect is greater in people with a high sodium intake. In addition, it plays an important role in the conduction of nerve impulses and muscle contractions, and is therefore important for the nervous system and good muscle function.
Iron, zinc, copper and manganese as amino acid chelate (bisglycinate)
For the minerals iron, zinc, copper and manganese, amino acid chelates (bisglycinates) were chosen. Here, each mineral particle is strongly bound (chelated) to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. Minerals in this compound form reach the small intestine well and are very well absorbed. They are also gentle on the stomach, which can be a major advantage particularly in the case of iron (Ferrochel®). In addition, Vitals specifically chooses the amino acid chelates from Albion Minerals, recognisable by the TRAACS® trademark, which stands for The Real Amino Acid Chelate System. This brand was created to clearly distinguish it from other, possibly inferior, unstable amino acid chelates. Albion has registered more than 100 patents worldwide, which provide assurance for the process, the science and the structure of their amino acid-chelated minerals.
A generous amount of choline
Choline has long been more or less standard in multis. But almost always in low dosages (between 10–30 mg). Because not much was known about it. But increasingly more is known now. In 2012, the European Commission approved three health claims for choline, applicable at a dosage of at least 82.5 mg. It is important for normal lipid and homocysteine metabolism and important for normal liver function. In 2016, the US set the RDA at 550 mg/day, based on clinical research specifically intended to establish daily requirements. In 2016, EFSA also judged that choline is an essential nutrient, but has not yet set an RDA. The adequate intake was set at 400 mg/day, based on average intake in European countries, not based on the American study. Average intake among adults in Europe ranges between 291 and 468 mg/day. Reason enough to include a generous amount of choline in a daily multi. Every Day Platinum contains no less than 170 mg choline from the VitaCholine® brand. This brand stands for superior quality and has been extensively researched.
Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin
In addition to 10 mg lutein and 2 mg zeaxanthin, Every Day Platinum also contains 10 mg meso-zeaxanthin, which is quite special and based on recent research. These are natural carotenoids found in high concentration in the retina and macula lutea. The body cannot produce lutein and zeaxanthin itself, but must obtain them from food. They occur, among other things, in green leafy vegetables and red, yellow and orange fruits and vegetables. Meso-zeaxanthin occurs only very limitedly in food (shrimp, salmon skin, trout skin and flesh). It is mainly produced in the retina by conversion of lutein through an enzymatic reaction. However, it can be supplemented well.
Co-enzyme Q10
Co-enzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) is a substance produced by the body and is found in the mitochondria (the so-called ‘energy factories’) of every cell in our body. Roughly translated, ‘ubiquinone’ means something like ‘present everywhere’. As we age, the body’s own production of co-enzyme Q10 gradually declines. Every Day Platinum therefore contains a good dosage of 50 mg.
Taurine
For adults, taurine is a semi-essential nutrient and is synthesised mainly in the liver and brain from the sulphur-containing amino acids cysteine and methionine; vitamin B6 is involved in this conversion. Endogenous synthesis is limited and intake from food is important for a good taurine status, especially if taurine requirements are increased. Since taurine is mainly present in meat, fish and poultry, vegetarians and vegans are more likely to have too low an intake from food.
Acetyl-L-carnitine
In food, carnitine occurs mainly in (red) meat and to a much lesser extent in plant-based foods. Carnitine can be converted into acetyl-L-carnitine as needed and vice versa. In the liver, kidneys and brain, carnitine can be synthesised from the amino acids lysine and methionine, with vitamin C, iron, vitamin B6 and niacin as co-factors. Supplementation with acetyl-L-carnitine has the advantage over L-carnitine that it passes the blood–brain barrier more easily.
Alpha-lipoic acid
Alpha-lipoic acid is a sulphur-containing fatty acid that occurs in the mitochondria of every cell. It is soluble in both fat and water, which is an important property. The body produces small amounts of alpha-lipoic acid. In addition, it is found in small amounts in food, for example in liver, spinach and broccoli.
PQQ
Pyrroloquinoline quinone disodium salt (PQQ) is a substance discovered in 1964 and occurs in small amounts in, for example, fermented products such as natto and tofu, eggs, breast milk, as well as certain herbs, vegetables and fruits. The body also produces very small amounts itself. Every Day Platinum uses PQQ based on natural fermentation.
