This multi is very well received. Good concentrations of vitamins. Highly recommended.
Once again, yet another attempt by manufacturers to launch a nearly perfect multivitamin onto the market, but the mission has failed yet again! I am incredibly disappointed. For years, I have been searching for an affordable, ideal multivitamin, but it simply does not exist (yet). I am starting to believe more and more that there is some sort of conspiracy among producers ... The platinum from Vitals seems promising, but if you are as critical as I am, then I find the price far too high, and it does not meet the needs of the average person. With two capsules a day and for the price they are asking, I expect to receive sufficient zinc and copper. Here, you only get 7.5 mg of zinc and 250 mcg of copper per two capsules per day?! What you do get is a high intake of vitamin D, as well as K2. I would have preferred D3 to be lower, around 40 mcg per day and 90 mcg of K2. Then you could increase the copper and zinc levels and possibly also reduce the price, which is currently €0.83 per tablet! I deliberately give 1 star because manufacturers are easily capable of bringing an affordable and good multivitamin to the market, yet they (refuse?) to do so for market-related reasons. Shameful.
The Every Day multis by Vitals are led by Every Day Platinum. We use the term 'Platinum' for the highest dosed, most complete variant in a series. And this certainly applies to this multi, where the most optimal dosages are achieved with two tablets per day. It is the first choice for anyone who wants the best of the best.
A major problem when formulating a multivitamin and mineral supplement is the limited space in a tablet. Particularly certain important macro minerals often suffer, such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium. Of course, price also plays a significant role. This often comes at the expense of important but expensive nutrients such as vitamin K2 and Q10. When developing Every Day Platinum, more space was created by assuming two tablets per day. So that it is not necessary to take various other basic supplements alongside to still achieve the most desirable daily dosages. The result is a multi with generous dosages of, among others, magnesium (100 mg), calcium (200 mg), potassium (300 mg), and vitamin C (400 mg), but also high doses of vitamin K2 (180 mcg) and vitamin D3 (50 mcg). And the addition of special nutrients such as lutein, zeaxanthin, meso-zeaxanthin, taurine, acetyl-L-carnitine, alpha-lipoic acid, Q10, and PQQ.
For whom
Every Day Platinum is for adults and the elderly who benefit from the higher dosages and who do not want to have to take a separate calcium, magnesium, potassium, and/or vitamin C, D, or K supplement alongside their multi. Ideal for supporting an active lifestyle (busy life, demanding job, physical work, sports) or to do everything possible to age as healthily as possible.
Based on recent data and insights
Every Day Platinum is a carefully designed multi with essential micronutrients and special additions. In its composition, well-absorbable substances and binding forms were chosen, in the right proportions and in dosages that matter. Per nutrient, taking into account the average intake of adults and the elderly in the Netherlands. And taking into account the estimated daily need to support or promote optimal health. Here, the substantiation for the recommended daily amounts (RDAs1) was considered, but where necessary, deviations were made based on the advancing (orthomolecular) insights obtained from (recent) scientific research. Choices obviously have to be made here, as only a limited amount fits in a tablet and the price cannot rise too high. Every Day Platinum is very well substantiated, excels in many respects, and will stand the comparison with other multis with flying colours.
1 The term RDA is used here because it is still the most well-known term, but nowadays it has been replaced by the term RI (reference intake). These are legally established reference values by the European Commission. These reference values provide an indication of the amount of vitamins and minerals an adult needs on average. No distinction is made based on age, gender, and specific circumstances. The amount of vitamins and minerals in a dietary supplement is indicated on the label as a percentage (%) of the RI. However, the RIs may differ from the recommended amounts as determined by the Health Council.
B vitamins in optimal forms and dosages
Every Day Platinum contains generous but responsible amounts of B vitamins. The daily need and what the average intake and distribution are have been carefully considered. The extent to which the body can convert the different B vitamins, the latest scientific insights, and safe upper limits have also been taken into account.
Every Day Platinum contains the biologically active (co-enzymatic) forms of vitamin B2 (riboflavin-5'-phosphate), B6 (pyridoxal-5'-phosphate), B12 (methyl- and adenosylcobalamin), and folic acid (5-methyltetrahydrofolate glucosamine salt). These are the forms as they are used by the body, and research shows that they have a higher bioavailability in the body.
Folic acid as 5-methyltetrahydrofolate
Folic acid (pteroylmonoglutamic acid), which is usually used in dietary supplements for the sake of stability, is a synthetic form that does not occur as such in nature. In food, it occurs as folate. Folic acid must be converted by the body into tetrahydrofolate and then into 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). Research shows that this complex conversion process is far from optimal in a significant group of people. Supplementation with 5-MTHF bypasses this problem.
Every Day Platinum uses the superior form 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, bound to glucosamine salt (with the brand name Quatrefolic®). This binding with glucosamine salt (from a plant source) makes it possible to keep the biologically active form stable and ensures optimal absorbability. Studies show that Quatrefolic® has higher water solubility, stability, and bioavailability. Additionally, 5-MTHF can cross the blood-brain barrier, unlike the 'ordinary' (synthetic) form of folic acid.
Vitamin B12 as methyl- and adenosylcobalamin
The absorption of vitamin B12 from food is a complex process. Additionally, there are indications that the RDA (or RI) of 2.5 mcg per day is underestimated and the needs of healthy adults and the elderly can vary and rise to over 20 mcg per day. Due to the safety of vitamin B12 supplementation and the sometimes difficult absorption of B12 from food and supplements, Every Day Platinum contains no less than 40 mcg of vitamin B12 in the biologically active forms methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin.
Many B12 products and multis contain cyanocobalamin, which is a cheaper, synthetic form of vitamin B12 that does not occur as such in nature and must be converted by the body into the active forms. The cyanide part is then detached from the cobalamin and must be cleared by the body. Studies also show that vitamin B12 in the form of methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin has a higher bioavailability than cyanocobalamin.
Vitamin D
European government institutions have established in recent years that the level for adequate vitamin D intake from food had to be higher (15 mcg) and that the maximum allowable dosage could be increased (100 mcg). In the Netherlands, they are still cautious and indicate that 10 mcg is sufficient and that the maximum amount is 75 mcg. The RDA/RI is oddly enough still stuck at 5 mcg. But in the orthomolecular world, the importance of higher dosages has been known for quite some time. Leading vitamin D experts advise that the vitamin D level (calcidiol level) should be at least 75 nmol/l. To maintain such a vitamin D level, an oral dose of vitamin D3 is needed, estimated at 25-75 mcg per day. Every Day Platinum therefore contains a generous dosage of 50 mcg per two tablets.
Vitamin K
Every Day Platinum contains 45 mcg of vitamin K1 and 180 mcg of vitamin K2. Vitamin K1 is mainly absorbed by the liver and ensures the activation of clotting factors, while vitamin K2 is distributed much more over the body tissues. The regularly established RDA for vitamin K is based on the amount needed for normal blood clotting. The optimal dosage for the other, very important functions of vitamin K is not considered. Such as ensuring calcium is properly absorbed and ends up in the right place, namely in the bones. And the regular recommendations also make no distinction between vitamin K1 and K2. Vitamin K2 is absorbed no less than 10 times better and has a much greater bioavailability than vitamin K1. Therefore, vitamin K2 is much more effective in achieving an optimal vitamin K status and superior to vitamin K1. Vitamin K2 is also much more effective than vitamin K1 in activating specific vitamin K-dependent enzymes. These activated enzymes ensure that calcium finds its way to the bones. Research has shown that 180 mcg of vitamin K2 is the optimal daily dosage. And research has shown that it is important to maintain bone health and not wait until it is too late.
Stability of vitamin K2
Vitamin K2 appears to be a very sensitive substance. Especially in combination with calcium and/or magnesium, the content of this vitamin in a tablet or capsule drops rapidly. Using vitamin K2 in a product with high dosages of calcium and/or magnesium is technically a real challenge. Vitals therefore uses a high-quality K2 ingredient with the brand name K2Vital Delta, which is even stable in a formula with many of these minerals. A patented micro-encapsulation process is used, in which the fat-soluble K2 particles are protected with two layers (gum arabic and starch) against air, light, and interaction with other ingredients. Vitals has conducted research in an independent laboratory on the stability of this K2Vital Delta, as well as other brands of vitamin K2, specifically in combination with the ingredients used in Vitals products. The conclusions were that protecting the K2 is absolutely necessary, that the K2 content remained stable with K2Vital Delta, and that it was superior to the other K2 ingredients.
High dosages of natural calcium and magnesium from the sea
A special feature of this multi is that it contains high dosages of calcium and magnesium, so they do not need to be taken as a separate product alongside. Very convenient. And the source of these minerals is also special: they are from the brand Aquamin® and come from the sea. The magnesium (Aquamin Magnesium) is obtained from the seawater of the Irish Sea, and studies show that it is particularly well absorbed by the body. In addition to about 35% elemental magnesium, the raw material also contains small amounts of more than 70 trace elements. The calcium (Aquamin Calcium) comes from a red algae called Lithothamnium calcareum. This type of algae absorbs minerals and trace elements from the sea and stores them. When alive, it has a beautiful red/pink colour, but when it dies, it calcifies and turns white or light grey. Only calcified red algae are harvested from the waters off the coast of Iceland. In addition to 32% calcium, the raw material also contains 3% magnesium and small amounts of more than 70 trace elements. The synergistic effect of the natural trace element profile of this calcium and magnesium may partly explain the better absorbability and the impressive studies conducted with it.
Potassium also well represented
Potassium is often one of the first minerals to suffer when a multivitamin and mineral supplement is formulated. This is because the daily need for potassium is large (about 3500 mg per day for adults) and not much fits in a tablet. Often you see no potassium or very low dosages in multis. But in Every Day Platinum, there is also room for no less than 300 mg of potassium! This is quite unique and yet very important. Because in addition to the many regular recommendations to pay attention to salt intake (sodium), you also read in studies and articles from the orthomolecular corner the recommendations to think about increasing potassium intake. Moreover, the recent food consumption survey shows that the daily intake in the Netherlands among adults averages around 3200 mg, while the recommended amount is 3500 mg. No unnecessary luxury, therefore, to get an extra 300 mg of potassium daily through a multi. Potassium has a beneficial effect on maintaining normal blood pressure, and this effect is greater in people with a high sodium intake. Additionally, it plays an important role in the conduction of nerve impulses and muscle contractions, and is therefore important for the nervous system and good muscle function.
Iron, zinc, copper, and manganese as amino acid chelate (bisglycinate)
For the minerals iron, zinc, copper, and manganese, amino acid chelates (bisglycinates) were chosen. Each mineral particle is strongly bound (chelated) to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. Minerals in this binding form reach the small intestine well and are very well absorbed. They are also mild on the stomach, which is a great advantage particularly in the case of iron (Ferrochel®). Moreover, Vitals specifically chooses the amino acid chelates from Albion Minerals, recognizable by the trademark TRAACS®, which stands for The Real Amino Acid Chelate System. This brand was created to distinguish well from other, possibly inferior, unstable amino acid chelates. Albion has registered more than 100 patents worldwide that guarantee the process, science, and structure of their amino acid-chelated minerals.
A generous amount of choline
Choline has been somewhat standard in multis for a long time. But almost always in low dosages (between 10-30 mg). Because not much was known about it. But much more is now known! In 2012, the European Commission approved three health claims for choline, which apply at a dosage of at least 82.5 mg. It is important for normal lipid and homocysteine metabolism and important for normal liver function. In 2016, the RDA in America was set at 550 mg/day, based on clinical research specifically aimed at determining the daily need. In 2016, the EFSA also judged that choline is an essential nutrient but has not yet set an RDA. The adequate intake was established at 400 mg/day, based on the average intake in European countries, not based on the American study. The average intake of adults in Europe ranges between 291 and 468 mg/day. Reason enough to include a generous amount of choline in a daily multi. In Every Day Platinum, no less than 170 mg of choline is included from the brand VitaCholine®. This brand stands for superior quality, and much research has been done with it.
Lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin
In addition to 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin, Every Day Platinum also contains 10 mg of mesozeaxanthin, which is quite special and based on recent research. These are natural carotenoids that are found in high concentration in the retina and macula lutea. The body cannot produce lutein and zeaxanthin itself, but must obtain them from food. These occur, among other things, in green leafy vegetables, and red, yellow, and orange vegetables and fruits. Meso-zeaxanthin occurs very limitedly in food (shrimp, salmon skin, and trout skin and flesh). It is mainly produced in the retina by converting lutein through an enzymatic reaction. It can be well supplemented.
Co-enzyme Q10
Co-enzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) is a substance naturally occurring in the body and is found in the mitochondria (the so-called 'energy factories') of every cell in our body. Loosely translated, 'ubiquinone' means 'present everywhere'. As we age, the body's own production of co-enzyme Q10 gradually decreases. Therefore, Every Day Platinum contains a nice dosage of 50 mg.
Taurine
Taurine is a semi-essential nutrient for adults and is mainly synthesized in the liver and brain from the sulfur-containing amino acids cysteine and methionine; vitamin B6 is involved in this conversion. Endogenous synthesis is limited, and intake from food is important for a good taurine status, especially if the taurine need is increased. As taurine is mainly present in meat, fish, and poultry, vegetarians and vegans are more likely to have a low intake through food.
Acetyl-L-carnitine
Carnitine is mainly found in (red) meat and to a much lesser extent in plant foods. Carnitine can be converted into acetyl-L-carnitine as needed and vice versa. In the liver, kidneys, and brain, carnitine can be synthesized from the amino acids lysine and methionine, with vitamin C, iron, vitamin B6, and niacin as co-factors. Supplementation with acetyl-L-carnitine has the advantage over L-carnitine that it more easily crosses the blood-brain barrier.
Alpha-lipoic acid
Alpha-lipoic acid is a sulfur-containing fatty acid found in the mitochondria of every cell. It is soluble in both fat and water, which is an important property. Small amounts of alpha-lipoic acid are produced in the body. Additionally, it is found in small amounts in food, such as liver, spinach, and broccoli.
PQQ
Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) is a substance discovered in 1964 and is present in small amounts in fermented products such as natto and tofu, eggs, breast milk, but also in certain herbs, vegetables, and fruits. The body also produces very small amounts itself. In Every Day Platinum, the patented MGC-PQQ® (formerly known as BioPQQ®) is used, based on natural fermentation. Much research has been done with this product, and it was approved as a dietary supplement in Europe in 2018.
